surprising that... to date, no one has bothered to just build plugs & molds for this entire aircraft- as popular as it is. great job Ary. nice plane. imagine this plane- updated in solid works or autocad- smooth flowing lines that sweep from fuselage to strakes- one piece molds, top & bottom halves from Eglass. think of the weight savings alone. full length flaperons- so much potential.

There will never be flaperons on a long EZ. This is self evident. If you re-design the outer mold line of and aircraft and also its entire construction method and structure, then its a different airplane all together and everything needs started from scratch.

Are there any options for landing gear suppliers any longer? Seems that is a big deal breaker for the Open-EZ Docs. Canopies are made. Main gear hoop is not.

I read the beginning of the construction plan of the LongEZ and there is something that bothers me: In the "administrative" part of the document, they say that distributing the plans is illegal, that a serial number is required for the aircraft and many other things... But, since the company selling the LongEZE plans closed almost 40 years ago (rutan aircraft or something like that), it remains illegal or you can do it by any impunity?

Rutan aircraft didnt close it became Scaled Composites, but the plans were sold by TERF. I though they went under, but their website is still up and selling a "Rutan Encyclopedia." i dont think anyone sells the plans for liability reasons. The plans are still protected IP (as far as i can tell) so i wouldnt try to distribute them.

I'm looking at this as there is an unfinished kit for sale with engine for a bit more than 5k. But looking at your blog it seemed like a 600 hours plus project with helping hands. I could hire people for the build but it would be too much if it takes years to complete.

With Plans built composite airplanes, you don't want to buy a partially finished airframe. If the original builder failed to complete it. What is the reason? Did they also fail at anything else? Did they realize they messed up, and need hundreds more hours and thousands more dollars to go back and redo something? What is their workmanship like? Did the epoxy get mixed precisely? Every single batch? Are the airfoils precisely made to the proper shape, with no waviness? You cannot know, unless you perform those steps. Honestly, these things take only about $5,000 in materials. Lycoming Engines show up used on barnstormers every day for reasonable prices. You definitely don't want an engine worth leas than $5k thats been sitting for 15-20 years. Keep in mind, Lycoming suggests an overhaul every 2,000hrs OR 12 years, whichever occurs first. (Nobody does it every 12 years, but the manufacturer maintenance manual does state this). Just get yourself a set of plans. They are available for the cost of printing paper on the internet from several sources. Download a set for cheap, plus all "Canard Pusher" publications for free and start building a simple component, such as a vertical winglet and rudder. It will cost you about $300, if that. BTW this is closer to a 2,600 hour project for most people if you count hours of research and reading and practice layups and travel to and from your worksite. A great talented builder can probably do it under 1200hrs but thats twice as long as you might think at 600hrs.

@@TheJustinJ the builder just died of old age before he can finish. I mean 600 hours with helping hands, I agree it's double or triple that amount if you build by yourself. A real plane or a proper LSA is a better deal these days then.
