The best part of the whole show for me was that the Germans in general (not only Otto) were shown just to be normal people forced to go to war. Even Colonel von Krieger wasn't a bad guy, he was just someone who did his job and wasn't soaked into Nazi propaganda by the way he treats the people in the town. Also as a native German speaker, the Germans actually spoke real German and had actual German accents. The Germans actually said swear words too for example the Colonel constantly says scheiße which means shit and it was always so fucking funny whenever he said Scheisse or Das ist Sabotage

Personally I love the sheer amount of foreshadowing that the series does while still keeping things fresh. Like yeah, the leader of the local resistance's name was sparrowhawk and Mr Herpin always uses a birdcall to attract the attention of students, but you don't really put the two together until you see him being referred to as sparrowhawk.

It also shows it in a nuanced way that's good for kids & adults. The Germans aren't monsters and the Partisans aren't paragons. Mr. Herpin opposes the occupation & later the poor treatment of Jews but otherwise seems to support the Vichy government & Petain, and has next to no issue involving literal children in the resistance. Oberst vonKrieger is effectively walking a tightrope where he can't be too lax but refuses to be outright cruel toward the villagers - his integrity ultimately winning out as he downgrades the orders he passes along from his General to his men leading into the show's climax. Every character is written as a believably real person of the time.

The author, Émile Bravo has also done a "re-imagination" of Spirou (or Robbedoes in Dutch), with the first comic starting in 1939 Brussels, where the Danzig issue is being discussed and the follow-up comics focus on him and Fantasio try to survive the war (with several focusses, including Collaboration vs. Resistance, the deportation of the Jewish communities,...) The artstyle is very similar to The Long Long Holiday, with the exception being that most German and Collaborationist members having some sort of shadow on them. If it's translated to English, I can definitely recommend it!

I discovered this beautiful French cartoon in 2020 on KZbin totally by accident. I never actually expected that there would be a family animated series set during WW2, so it was a pleasant surprise to discover that this show existed. Being a huge WW2 buff, a fan of animated shows and movies and a huge Francophile, I just needed to watch 'The Long Long Holiday'. I watched this show twice, first in French and second time in English. It's just so good, the show accurately depicts the horrors of WW2 in an age appropriate way for a younger audience. This show is super underrated and it needs more attention and more love. There should be more shows like this aimed at a younger audience.

I’m German and from what I’ve seen about this show, it seems like an amazing portrayal of our people in the army back then. It looks at them from a more humanizing perspective. Not just seeing them terrible Nazi wanting to murder every non German. It’s really tiring to see people from back then all seen as nazis, because it’s mostly not true. Yes, there was a lot of propaganda shaping their day to day lives, but they’re still humans. War captives were sometimes sent to farmers to basically work for them. People weren’t really allowed to show them kindness, but my great grandfather always invited them for dinners to eat with the family. When the Americans freed the place he lived at he only avoided being shot due to his kindness and a captive mentioning how he treated them. It’s important to understand that not everyone liked the regime. We often forget that.

it is mah childhood I watched it during the summer holidays (the cartoon came earlier since I'm in France) and I thought it was just wonderful. Most of the WWII cartoons, there were no exaggerations, and they were historically correct...they showed with Otto, for example, that "n@zi" didn't mean "German"...c was also sad and sometimes disturbing, with only suggestions of the pangs that have affected the world.. I loved the characters (especially Fernand), the landscapes... it was quite realistic, the story was gripping. The episodes were cut by little Stop-Motion animations from Anne Franck's notes. I really liked and again today, it marked me.

What also feels crazy, is that this came out seven years ago. Honestly in terms of animation and series history that isn’t very long at all. Not even a decade. Yet somehow, even though I love animation and have done so for several years now, I haven’t heard about it until this month. I am 26 so I really miss the opportunity to fully engage with it even more at a time when it would’ve affected me emotionally greater than it already has.
