Cole (David Carradine) and Sam (James Remar) duel in a knife fight for the affection of Belle (Pamela Reed).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The hook in Walter Hill's mythic retelling of the James-Younger outlaw legend is in the casting; the James, Younger, Miller, and Ford Brothers are played by a string of acting brothers, the Keachs, the Carradines, the Quaids and the Guests. The film begins as outlaws are robbing a bank. After the robbery, Ed Miller (Dennis Quaid) finds himself kicked out of the gang for needlessly killing a man during the robbery. Jesse James (James Keach) hands over Ed's share of the money and tells him to leave, a feeling held mutually by Ed's brother Clell (Randy Quaid). After the killing the gang decides to split up for awhile. The James boys return to their wives and farms, while Cole Younger (David Carradine) travels to Texas with his prostitute girlfriend Belle Starr (Pamela Reed). After the brief respite, the gang reunites to rob a well-stocked bank in Northfield, Minnesota. The robbery turns out disastrously, with most of the gang either wounded or dying. The James boys are the only ones not seriously hurt, and they leave the rest of the gang behind, escaping while they can. After the James boys leave, the remnants of the gang are captured. But trailing the Jameses is a relentless posse. Frank and Jesse manage to keep one step ahead until the Ford brothers (Christopher Guest and Nicholas Guest) make a deal with the Pinkerton detectives trailing the outlaws.

James Remar : Such a perfect example of someone in the Most Underrated Actors Club . He is good looking . He is fierce . He is tough . Just has this look about him that says “ you don’t want to piss me off “!! But he can switch to a fun loving character as well . He is a scene stealer . I think it still is. The thing with period pieces is, they don't require computer graphics or technology displayed that we haven't already mastered. The old West was 150 years ago. We can build the buildings exactly the way they were if we want. We can make the costumes. The guns. All you need is horses, and they haven't changed much over that time. This is why Westerns with good production values- and we can include Sergio Leone's work here- hold up better in film than do Sci-Fi and Fantasy. Those latter ones get better (theoretically) if you wait longer to make them because then you have better technology to work with. Lord of the Rings is a great example. That story was around for half a century and had never been made, and if it HAD, it would have been laughable only a few years later. The original Star Wars is a bit like this. We have seen sets/equipment graphics improve, so it makes the original look a bit cheesy. But a great Western can stand the test of time. Check out High Plains Drifter.

I had the pleasure of meeting Fran Ryan in Vons Grocery store in Burbank on riverside drive 2 weeks after the movie came out. I had just seen the movie 1 week prior. She was very kind to my Cousin, my Uncle and myself. She asked us to walk her out to her car she had something she wanted to show us. It was a signed by the main Actors the Carridine brother the Keach brothers and Dennis Quade Fran was very pleasent to us. She played in a lot of the old westerns. She played the mother of the james brothers in the movie Longriders

It kind of reminds me of something I remember reading once although I can't speak to its authenticity. Back in the times of Germanic "Barbarian" tribes, a group referred to as the Saxons supposedly would settle certain grievances and disputes by tying each other by one of their ankles to the other with a length of rope so that neither could simply run away or otherwise be too far away from the other and each combatant would be armed with a long knife. (A type of knife called a, "Seax," the short name for it anyway that gave this tribe their name long story short.) They would then fight each other in this manner until either one fighter would either yield or had been killed. Supposing this is true, this fight scene almost seems as though its harkening back to how things were done in those days, although I have my doubts as to whether or not that's what the filmmakers were going for. What I also find interesting is how similarly this Saxon method (again, if it's accurate) was to other systems in and around this time period in that part of the world such as the Viking-Era Scandinavian Holmgang and the Celtic equivalent, the name of which I sadly don't recall.

Through testimonies on the internet, news and relatives who unfortunately have suffered a stab, they mention that because of the adrenaline you do not feel anything, just like a hot blow, the pain comes when the adrenaline is low, in the movies they exaggerate it too much, although it is realistic that has been in a state of shock, because you hardly realize that they stab you, but those testimonies are from fights, I don't know if the same thing happens in different cases.

The subtle aspects of this movie are what's best. In the full scene they have the Pinkertons close behind them so they all split up and and Cole goes to Texas cause that's where Belle Shirley is at. It is amazing that he is in a Texas saloon and just all of a sudden there she is. The first little subtle cultural thing is she says welcome to Texas and he looks around and says well it"s loud. The next subtle thing is at the end of the fight he leaves his own knife in the guys leg and then reaches up and takes that guys knife. On a symbolic subtle level that is so Ozark hillbilly thing to do...

To fully comprehend just how short the history of the USA truly is, consider that in real life, Thomas Coleman “Cole” Younger died about two weeks before my dad turned one year old. Dad knew well people who were veterans and spouses of veterans of the Civil War, and, and Pioneers of the Oregon Trail. My dad heard stories about the West and about the war from people who personally knew Younger, Frank James, Buffalo Bill and even Custer. All this history happened just a couple of lifetimes ago. Grandpa was born literally during the Wounded Knee massacre, and less than 40 miles away from the field of battle. We live in the shadow of these people and events that today we see depicted in films.

i once accidentally stuck myself just above the knee with a tanto bladed knife. the impact hurt like hell, almost made me cry. i pulled the knife out and said “sumnitch that hurt”. it wasn’t easy getting a bandage to stay around my leg. i still have the scare. makes me laugh now when i see the old wound.

wow belle starr had a hell of a life for western fans . married to sam starr lover of cole younger and dallied with a bandit called blue duck! her son henry bridged the gap between the old west and the 20th century.he robbed banks in olklahoma and was imprisoned by bill tilghman.he later after release made some early silent pictures one i think for tilghman ! he then went back to robbery being killed in a holdup about 1917.tilghman gave up pictures went back to marshalling taming the toughest oil boom town in olklahoma! he was killed in a gunfight with a corrupt prohibition agent mid 20s when he was 76!

This is a pretty inventive and cool scene! I'm not any kind of knife fighter (I find the term to be ridiculous given that's not at all how knife-based attacks happen in reality, but this is a movie and that's beside the point) but this is probably one of the very few instances I've seen in movie knife fights where blade-to-blade contact is made. I've seen some analysis videos by edged weapons experts who typically denounce the idea of blocking a knife with a knife, but as I've stated since this isn't my field of expertise, I would be curious to know if anyone out there has a differing opinion on the concept of a knife being blocked by another knife edge-to-edge as well as your reasons as to the opinion you hold.

Historically bowie knives were held in hand different than what they are held today. In the western days when knife fights were frequent, the bowie was held in the way that the sharpened back edge was the main striking edge and the spine of the blade was used to parry incoming strikes. The longer edge which today is considered the main striking edge was back then for the back cut.
