I think one of the contributing factors to Supremacy's long or short gameplay is players both leaving and joining. If players leave, then it becomes short since you're low on manpower. However, this gives the losing side to get a really good player to turn the tides. Hence it can go on for a little longer.

I played a 5 hour game of Supremacy. Nobody could take a third objective because we were all either defending the command posts we had or attacking the ones we didn't. The other team had the same idea, so it was a stalemate that was only broken after a group of like 10 rocket troopers went after an enemy command post and cleared it out. Once we got on the enemy ship, it took us the full time to destroy the darned thing. This was before they screwed up the Death Trooper, so it was really fun to just mow down stupid rebels with Overload as they threw themselves at our dug-in positions.
