Years ago (85-86) I was in the "house band" at The Dunes Casino in Las Vegas, in the lounge. We'd get one hour breaks and I could to the main room and watch the shows (for free - exactly what I could afford after poker and black jack). They were featuring a comedy revue from "The Comedy Store". My favorite comedian was Charlie Hill. The guy killed me, in a good way - the Indians won!!!! You brought me a lot of laughter and I have thought of you many times over the years. Funny, too, I just read that you were born in Detroit - I was born in Flint. Rest in peace, brother.

Actually, Johnny Cash had no Native American ancestry. For a long time he believed he was a quarter Native American, but found that he was almost entirely of Scottish descent. Nevertheless, Johnny still did alot to advance Indian causes.

Charlie Hill is an amazingly funny guy. He blazed a trail through the minefields of the entertainment world far ahead of any other American Indians. He was the first Native comedian to appear on Network television. He developed an early bond with comedian Richard Pryor who gave Charlie an early boost. I recently saw on FNX a wonderful documentary about Charlie that you should see. And the delightful thing is that Charlie is just now coming into the acclaim he should have received years ago.

Thanks for the information. We tried to do as much documentation as we could, but as to who's Indian and who's not it sometimes is very hard to tell. Anyway, thanks for the feedback!

@tahdooahnippah Yes, at the Los Angeles SkinsFest Native American Film Festival in November. And I don't believe his life's work has reached its peak yet either.

@tahdooahnippah I wished I had more time in the video to devote to Bob Hicks and all that he has done in Hollywood for Indian people. I have a copy of "Return Of The Country" which is a classic film. It should be seen by everyone I also lament not being able to mention so many others who have had an impact in the native community in Hollywood for so long, like Zahn McClarnon, Larry Sellars, Larry Smith, Ian Skorodin, Sheri Foster, Geraldine Keams, Casey Camp, Shawna Clay, Joe Diaz, .....

I thought it was established that Johnny Cash had no Native blood at all, just Scottish/Irish roots? Or was he an adopted member?
@TimeRiverProductions10 жыл бұрын
hi Koen, I don't know. Charlie Hill is the one who added Johnny to the list. Unfortunately we can no longer ask Charlie where he got his information. If Cash isn't, so be it; then we made a mistake. Charlie was close friends with Floyd Red Crow Westerman, so the part about Cash's influence on Floyd is based on first hand knowledge. -Kevin
