The Biggering song truly hit the nail on the original message from Dr. Seuss's book that depicts the dark accuracy about materialism and corporate greed. Coraline wasn't scary, also the song is still anti- capitalist in the final version, this song is much clearer, catchier (this is meant for kids), and more importantly shorter
@veegsredds3 жыл бұрын
@@deathtrooper2048 The final movie frames the Onceler as someone who was manipulated by his family and mostly oblivious to all the damage he caused for the most part. This song gives the Onceler full agency and responsibility over his choices, so it avoids implanting a false message of corporations "not knowing any better", an excuse corporations love to pull and that Illumination was very deliberately sliding into the narrative
@YaoiChan183 жыл бұрын
@@veegsredds but they don't? Theres a MASSIVE difference between being oblivious and willfull ignorance, and they very blatantly paint a picture of willful ignorance as 'How Bad Can I Be?' goes on. Because with this characterization, it IS true that the Oncler himself wasn't the main catalyst to his downfall, it was his narcisist Mother and his toxic family, and the consequences on him that being raised in that environment will bring. At first, his actions did not feel like that big of a deal, a few trees here and there in a massive forest; whatever, right? But as the song goes it is clear that while yes, the Oncler IS caught up in his own success, he very clearly knows what he's doing, he's just refusing to awknowledge it. You literally see him pouring the toxic chemicals and flumes into the river and air, taking the food from the barbaloots, dismissing the Lorax...we see him escalate in the film from not seeing a problem, to pretending the problem doesn't exist until he can't escape the reality. Besides, they weren't trying to make the ONCLER the villain here. That role goes to O'Hare. They don't beat you over the head with it as much as this masterpeice would have, but O'Hare is the characterization of this very song.

I hate how they cut this song to make the movie more relatable, completely ruining the message in the process so they could do exactly what it is warning against. They make the Oncler seem more like someone who was just pressured by his mom to make bad decisions rather than someone who was consumed by greed so that more people would like him and watch the movie more. By doing this, they changed the Lorax from being a cautionary tale against the dangers of capitalism and over using resources to being a story about yet another "quirky" main character who makes bad decisions to fit in.
@rebenai4 жыл бұрын
Not only that but the "how bad can I be?" makes it seem that he was just oblivious to what he was doing to the environment around him. This song shows that he knows exactly what's going around him but he just chooses to ignore it with "who cares if some things are dying?" instead of "who cares if a few trees are dying?" Corporates try to pretend to be innocent by saying that they were oblivious to what was happening and they use that as an excuse, which is the same as how "how bad can I be" paints the Once-ler. Biggering really shows the truth and I don't think a corporation wants to be viewed in that way even though it's the truth.

Using this song would have probably produced fewer profits. As the movie ended up being made, "How Bad Can I Be?" fits better than this one. As it seems to have been, to make the film more saleable, they made it romantic, made the once faceless and dark Onceler a naive and charming pretty boy that looked like a Jonas Brother, and so on. If they had used this song, which I like more, they would have had to refrain from making those changes. Doing that would have made this song fit in the movie, and the movie would have preserved better the message of the story, but as I said, they would have probably made less money. You know. I think if they wanted to keep it at a light tone like they did in the final product, they could easily change it to make it interesting AND educational. Have nothing change until the first tree is cut, you don't need to have every character rhyme all the time, but you MUST have rhyming in there for at least someone. And I think the Lorax himself should be the one to do it. The more the Lorax gets in the Onceler's way, the more the Onceler ignores him because "I don't listen to poets." When the kid goes to return to the Onceler, have him interrupted by O'Hare, but don't have it stop there. Have them follow him home, and sneak around the back, to find Taylor Swift back there. Have him ask her what was so special about trees to her, as a little extra motivation to risk his life for her, and instead of "tree pretty," have it be more scientific as a way to say the more trees there are, the less of a problem they'd have with people who can't afford air (sounds funny reading it aloud) When he returns to the Onceler, take out the Donkey Kong reference, and replace it with a Seussical instrument like the Poggle Horn or something like that. Instead of the Lorax pushing the Onceler into the river, have him replace all the cutting utensils with marshmallows, thanks to the help of the barbaloots (because if you're going to use the gag of marshmallows being their way of getting attention, have it as a theme so they can communicate with the Onceler as well) Then, his story would tie in similarly until How Bad Can I Be. Change the lyrics around so he still seems oblivious. With the kid, have it more difficult for him each time he goes to see the Onceler, so each time he's there, he'd get more cautious and eager to get the tree. It would be an interesting dynamic, in my mind. Onceler: You're early, kid. Are trees that important to you? Effron: Well, yeah. I mean, if I'm coming out here day in and day out while O'Hare is watching--- Onceler: Yeah yeah, personal stuff, I get it. Well, anyway, as my business picked up, I started to feel the need to improve.... Biggering would then kick in with the lyrics untouched, and the song cutting as soon as the Onceler screams "gratifying" with his attention going to the last tree falling, bringing his emotions down to Earth as reality sets in. Lorax: Good job, kid. You took it too far. I'm glad you can now see what kind of monster you are. Or have become, might I say unless... Onceler: Unless?? Lorax: Unless someone cares a whole awful lot, nothing's going to get better. Believe me, it's not. This would be the only time the Onceler understood the rhymes, as every other time was not as straightforward, but this one hit close to his heart as reality was setting in. Instead of his devastation for "What have I done" as a way to say that he didn't know what he was doing until it was too late, turn it into a way to say "what have I become" and fade between that and the present day with the Onceler holding his hand out in a fist, saying for the kid to catch as he drops the seed. "Now go do what I was unable to. Right the wrongs I've made." Then we have the chase scene, (if you want) but instead of everyone turning their emotions on the flip of a coin, have it as soon as the wall is broken down, with Effron explaining. Effron: This is what has become of our once great land. We can change this darkness if we start with just putting this one seed in the ground, and we all take part in making sure it grows. Let it grow would happen, but with everyone on board with a more realistic way of thinking. As the song ends, we don't see the Lorax come back, we see the Onceler looking out his window, a single tear running down his face as he just thinks to himself "If only you were still here. Maybe then, you could see how better it will be. Because if it weren't for you, I wouldn't be able to make them see."
