Considering how dark this film is (almost no daylight scenes, ominous ambient music, Uncanny Valley orcs and ringwraiths), this main theme is surprisingly cheerful. I adore Howard Shore's soundtrack for Jackson's trilogy, but I feel Rosenman's main theme better captures the spirit of the books and the feeling of "eucatastrophe" (a term Tolkien coined): as bad as things are, there _will_ be a happy ending to this story. I love it, and hearing this theme gets me more emotional.

Ok, but the Bakshi version was clearly much more respectful of Prof. Tolkien and the text than Jackson and his 2 gals were. PJ and his 2 gals obviously thought they had a much better understanding of Tolkien's World than Tolkien himself, and their harebrained revisions demonstrate that extensively!
@Ryan_Thompson_Guitarist4 жыл бұрын
@@theexile6605 Completely disagree. Bakshi scrapped entire sections and characters from the book to fit 2 entire books in about 2 hours. There was no sense of scale or scope. At the end, it doesn't feel like the characters have been on a long journey. characters like Saruman and Sam were completely butchered in the animated movie, while Sam from the PJ trilogy was almost like the book Sam come to life. The only parts omitted were parts that would have ruined the pacing (parts that work in the book, like Scouring of the Shire and Tom Bombadil, wouldn't have worked in the movie at all). Gandalf in the PJ movies was perfect as well. Only characters such as Frodo and Aragorn could be considered better in the Bakshi film.
@theexile66054 жыл бұрын
@@Ryan_Thompson_Guitarist You're entitled to your opinion, it's funny that I completely disagree with most of the points you mentioned. By my estimate Bakshi was many times more efficient at delivering actual material from the text than PJ and his gals. I emphatically include his gals because it is clear to me that PJ truckles to his women on all the transparent ideological and PC alterations that they made to the text that retarded leftist critics (who could give a damn about Tolkien) applauded. Of course Bakshi only had two hours and PJ had about 5 for the first 2 books, but I would say Bakshi did a much better job of conveying the time/distance (or "scope") factors from Hobbiton to Rivendell than PJ. Both skip the Old Forest and Tim Benzedrino (I hope you get my reference here), but PJ makes Bree appear to be right next door to the Shire! PJ also skips the "Flight to the Ford" in favor of a brief horsechase with Arwen, whereas Bakshi is much more faithful to the text for that chapter, even though he had much less time to work with (though he unfortunately replaces Glorfindel with Legolas). I did feel that Bakshi conveyed the distance from Rivendell to Moria to Lorien to Rohan as well in much less time. PJ also wasted a whole lot of time with the "Saruman and the Uruk-hai at Isengard" show, which were not part of the text, which rightly focused on The *Fellowship* of the Ring! He also cut out the Warg attack before Moria, which was a great scene, for some inexplicable reason. Btw what sections exactly did Bakshi "scrap" that you were referring to, I'm curious. As for Sam and the cast, I have only good things to say about the casting, acting, and cinematography of PJ's version, my only beef is with the screenplay and the harebrained revisions to the texts. I do agree with you that Aragorn (played by the legendary John Hurt) and Frodo were well done in the Bakshi version, as well as the other Fellowship members (Legolas is well played by Anthony Daniels, C3PO as you may know). Maybe Saruman was better understood in PJ's version, but that pales in comparison to what they did to Gandalf, making him often look like a cowardly old fool, and moreover taking many of his best lines away and putting them into other character's mouths. PJ has him foolishly telling Saruman the location of the Ring, whereas in truth he never told Saruman that secret and already distrusted Saruman to some degree, Saruman guessed it as I recall. They have Gandalf "fearful" of and unwilling to go into Moria, whereas in the text he urged going there in spite of the fact that Durin's Bane was known to be there and the obvious risk to himself. At Moria they have Frodo and not Gandalf figuring out the word of opening, again making him look silly. They also steal his great line "Then You will certainly Not be chosen, Peregrin Took!!" at Rivendell and give it to Sam or someone. Above all they make the fellowship seem a democracy, whereas in fact almost everyone deferred to Gandalf as the chosen leader. In the Hobbit movies they predictably have him as a very junior member of the White Council, which was poppycock, and of course they play up the female Galadriel as the big queen who is large and in charge, while Gandalf defers to her most obsequiously and confesses his fears to her like a therapist. In the text, Galadriel wanted Gandalf as the leader of the White Council. In truth, as the text points out MANY times from many different characters, one of Gandalf's most significant attributes was his tremendous courage. Yet they have Gandalf begging Galadriel to keep him company at the confrontation with Sauron in the 3rd Hobbit movie where he is taken away, like a frightened child! They also inexplicably remove his great confrontation at the Gate of Minas Tirth with the Lord of the Nazgul and instead have him giving a little speech before the ensuing melee. None of this is Ian McKellen's fault of course, he did a great job with what he was given. I could certainly go on, but you get the idea. How carefully have you read the books, to make your pronouncements? I have read them all, including the Silmarillion, at least 10 times each and probably double that. Have you studied the texts as carefully as I have?? Cheers to you, thx for your reply. PS. They also butchered (edited here) Treebeard's and Faramir's characters, the relationship between Frodo and Sam, and the real relationship between Aragorn and Arwen and Elrond. Ugh. And Thror and Thrain as well.

Great composer. This March was actually the happiest and most traditional sounding melody in the film. Too happy? It was perfect for that animated film then(in 1978); the composer was most probably trying to convey that sense of "eucatastrophe", that sense of a happy ending after heroic efforts, after the hard march of an almost impossible quest, and of course, the sympathy we feel towards the heroes (Frodo & company)t. Other movements of this score are actually very dark avant-garde sounding.

Much of this music was recycled in Star Trek IV. I'd like to believe it's due to some noble idea like the following archetypal analysis (as best as I can put together with my limited knowledge of literature): The subtitle, "The Journey Home," and the story itself with its theme (a single heroic effort to save the world by saving the whales) reminded Rosenman of Lord of the Rings (the single heroic effort of Frodo to save the world, while on a long journey also saving himself from the ring's deadly power). But truly, I just think he figured no one remembered it or cared much, and he liked it, so he thought he could easily make it work well enough for a Star Trek movie, for Pete's sake! Having said that, I love Rosenman's compositions a lot and recognize genius in him. May he RIP.

You're out of your mind. LotR (especially this animated version) and The Hobbit (especially the original novel) FAR outshine those other fake fantasies. Ok, Narnia is good but Harry Potter isn't really fantasy (more like modern youth fiction just with fantasy characters) and the Game of Thrones show was always trash. Original novels - meh. I prefer some of Martin's other work. (Like his early Star Wars stuff)

Peter Jackson should have hired Rosenman to do the scores for his version. 1,000 times greater than the soundtrack he got.

Hum, really ? I mean, Rosenman is great, but come on, Howard Shore did an amazing job on both trilogies.

Also bakshi hated the score he got.

Guillaume Glade I agree with him, this theme is fantastic and is MUCH better than anything Howard Shore did. Howard Shore's scores for the LotR movies are decent, but this is fantastic stuff here.

As cool as that would be, somehow I don't think that this theme would suet Jackson's version of LOTR.

Highly debatable.

This music sounds so ugly and horrible no wonder Bakshi hates it. But this theme is good, it is more than ok.
