My favourite blooper - because you can see it on screen - is Eomer’s sword falling out of its scabbard and onto the ground when he mounts his horse while speaking to Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli. Especially since they filmed that scene by putting cameramen in the crowd of rohirrim warriors and all 3 had to keep a straight face as it happened, which is why they have slightly peculiar looks on their faces in that scene.

Regarding Eowyn's immediate infatuation with Aragorn: she's a princess of a warrior kingdom, surrounded by despair, loss, and the weakening of her uncle's mind. Along comes Gandalf, with Aragorn in tow. Aragorn is one of the most noble, brave, and honorable men in Middle-Earth, and a highly skilled warrior to boot. He's literally the embodiment of everything she's ever wanted in a man.

it's also inferred, in the book, that the trio stay for a short while in rohan before everyone went to helms deep. during that time, eowyn shadows the trio [namely aragon] to see if they're actually trustworthy because of wormtongue's previous actions. during this time is then she begins to fall for aragon, as she sees how noble he is and how everyone responds / reacts to just his presence. after being surrounded by so much dispair, seeing someone with so much "light" within them made her fall HARD for the dude. plus, you saw how he pushed open those doors...

The filming logistics had to be absolutely insane. 2-3 hours to apply the makeup for a single actor if being close to the camera. To make the chain mail for the LOTR movies, two guys spent over two years linking plastic rings into chain mail. Altogether, they used 12.5 million rings and each chainmail contained 80,000 rings. That's the type of production lengths they went to for this trilogy. Hopefully see the finale in a week or so vs 2-3 months? lol

Faramir dragging Frodo halfway back to Gondor before changing his mind (and Frodo holding up the Ring for the Ringwraith "oh hello sir is this what you're looking for?") was a change from the books. Originally he felt the lure of the Ring and was like "oh HELL no, this thing is a problem and it needs to go." I imagine they did it for pacing or extra conflict or to build out the relationship with his father or something, but book fans weren't thrilled about it since being wiser than his brother was kind of his thing.
@GarrettJayChristianАй бұрын
The split books in each volume obscure the timeline a bit--likely a product of having to split the volumes at all. By the time Frodo and Sam are at Henneth Anûn, Aragorn & co are already on the Paths of the Dead. Add in a superfluous Warg battale and a full hour of Helm's Deep for some reason, and there's a LOT of time to kill on the other side to keep rough synchronicty.
@user-lv5bt3nt3rАй бұрын
Faramir actually took frodo and sam closer to their objective - in the books and the movie. Osgiliath is the frontier between Gondor and Mordor but all tje way up to the tower of Cirith Ungol (the pass of the spider) is ‘old Gondor’ that has been lost to Mordor. Minas morgul (its Gondor name, Minas Ithil - the tower of the moon) is just up the road from Osgiliath. All Faramir did was escort frodo and sam through Ithilien, which was on their route anyway.

The Steward of Gondor is like The Hand of the King. In the absence of the king, the stewardship passes from father to son until a king returns to the throne. Boromir is the eldest son of Denethor, and would eventually have become the Steward, equivalent to a king. Aragorn’s return means Boromir just got his future as ruler revoked. This is why Boromir was so hostile at the Council of Elrond, stating “Gondor has no King, Gondor needs no King,” and then sulks. Later when he’s simmered down and had a chance to get to know Aragorn and maybe consider the King would still need a Steward, he speaks to Aragorn about how their paths will lead them back to Minas Tirith, and when he says “the lords of Gondor have returned” he’s saying he accepts Aragorn as an equal lord of Gondor alongside himself…he’s ready to share that status and power. It takes until he’s dying for him to fully accept Aragorn as his brother, his captain and his King.

The Gandalf vs. Balrog scene at the beginning is twinned with another such fight in the Silmarillion. The 1st age elf Glorfindel vs. a Balrog while protecting those fleeing from Gondolin. He was even sent back to Middle Earth after his death to serve the elves in much the same inspiring role as Gandalf serves. His role of rescuing Frodo from the Black Riders in the Fellowship of the Ring was given over to Arwen in the movie. And it's possible that Sting, Bilbo's blade, may have belonged to Glorfindel, as it was found alongside the two known elven swords.

Another thing to consider is Arwen. During the Lord of the Rings tale, she is around 2,778 years old. If you're Aragorn, who is going to be more appealing: a child of 24 years, or a woman who appeared to be in her 20's but was close to 3000 years old, with all the wisdom and experience that comes with it? Also, Arwen died one year after Aragorn did.

Gollum--actually goes back and forth between good and evil personas in the book, but because of Sam’s reasonable skepticisms and poisoning of the ring, Gollum tends to choose evil more than good. The tragedy of Gollum lies in the fact that the Ring, for centuries, weakened him and his mind to the point that Gollum believes his own lies completely, and his ready to betray anyone, including his own self, for the Ring; that’s how complete and total evil Saron and his Ring is, it’s even powerful enough to make you literally be at war with yourself, not merely figuratively or in hyperbole, but in all actuality. 😮

34: 44 The design of the Wargs was based on hyenas, to add some of the monstrousness that makes them more than big wolves. Also, prehistoric sloths were no joke. Megatherium was an absolute unit, look them up.

At 26:19, the funeral of Theodred is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. It isn't in Tolkien's book, but I'm sure he would approve. The movie differs greatly from the book in this part; most of the middle third of the movie was made up by the screen writers. T2T must have given the writers the most trouble of the three movies. LOTR isn't a true trilogy; rather, it is a single long story that was published in 1954-55 in three volumes because of economic conditions in post-WWII Britain. As a result, T2T is something of a "middle child," without a proper beginning or end, and the screen writers had to make up lots of plot to make a watchable movie. In Tolkien's version of the story, the action for once is moving faster than in the movie, and the death of Theodred is glossed over in order to get our cast to Helm's Deep. Bernard Hill and Miranda Otto just kill their roles here! Note that Eowyn's song is sung in Anglo-Saxon. In the book, the Rohirrim speak a different language from the other Men of the West of Middle-earth. Tolkien, in his role as translator of the Red Book of Westmarch, has translated the Common Speech or Westron as Modern English, while the language of the Rohirrim is translated as Old English or Anglo-Saxon. The screen writers have wisely decided not to over-complicate the dialogue here, so we only hear the speech of the Rohirrim here and there, most notably here in Eowyn's song.

These characters are all so well placed, each of them has a role and together they bring this world to life. So good.

Did you know that Viggo Mortensen improvised the defense of Helm’s Deep? An orc army just happened to show up that day and he rolled with it and that’s the take they ended up using.

According to the novel f The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the characters were smoking tobacco. While Peter Jackson's script did lean into the cannabis culture slightly, it's still tobacco.

At 40:05 you say, "How pretty." Not many reactors comment on the wonderful matte painting in the background. In the book, Faramir says, "Moonset over Gondor. Fair Ithil [the Moon], as he goes from Middle-earth, glances upon the white locks of old Mindollluin [the tall mountain behind the city of Minas Tirith]. It is worth a few shivers."
