In this age of high definition cinematic presentation in video games, I miss the days when we had to use our imagination. It made getting to the setting of a game much more personal and deep. The minimalist visuals from hardware limitations so effectively invoked one's imagination; a simple 4 color, pixelated landscape told so much with so little. I always found, often times, that the less someone has to work with, the harder they will strive to make their vision a reality.

Played it when it first came out :) you start with four characters which you control independently. Each can move a certain "steps" per day until it's night time for him. When it's night for all characters you control (you can recruit additional characters) the turn ends. New characters usually bring their own army so you race to recruit them before the AI does. It was confusing to play in 84 because there was no in game map but the video suggests there is one so this problem seems solved.

The kid in the movie "Big" with Tom Hanks played a bit of a computer game that might be what you mean. I could not find a clip of it, but I recall he uses fire to melt some ice.

I remember a kids movie in which the main character, a kid, was playing a game that looked just like this one. After that he went on an adventure. Does that ring a bell to anyone? I've been looking for that movie for years now.

Very intrigued by it, what is it like? Is it grand strategy and something like King's Bounty mashed together? Is it complicated to play? I love the super-clean look.

Think of the original game as playing chess using only the pieces's point of view, i.e. no "birds's eye" view. In the 80's the game was shipped with a paper map and you used it as a reference where your armies are and it was sort of fun but I think you have to be open and ready for this playing style in this era. Of course, if an overhead map is provided, this problem is irrelevant.

There is a possibility I had both films on one tape and watched them several times as a child back to back. But the movie I am thinking about has the main character in a fantasy adventure and I remember there being a ship! :D This information is all pointless if the movie had nothing to do with the game though:D. the trailer, while has a couple of neat ideas, seems terribly amateurish. and the tex appearing in the middle, written with a generic font is possibly the most jarring. A voice over would help immensly. Hell, I'd be glad to record it myself!

Lords of Midnight was certainly unique in it's time. It was also really really really boring and tedious when you got right down to it.
