This is basically like strays. An expedition of archer soldiers were sent to the endless cold tundra. They ran out of food and had to stay in one spot to avoid the dangers roaming the biome. Eventually. They couldn’t survive anymore died. Their flesh and clothes were slowly rotting off. Un till the extreme cold of the tundra stopped that, and turned them in to skeletons who still have their old rotten flesh and clothes on them. They now roam the endless tundra, protecting it to outsiders.

What is (in my opinion) the actual lore: Under certain conditions, undead mobs can adapt to their current environment and evolve. Lore in a block game doesn’t need to be overly complicated.

The pillagers made the dessert temples because they were experimenting on internal life. They made the creepers in the dessert temples since we can find tnt and gunpowder, they had traps to protect there secrets and all the failed bodies are all the chests
