A re-emerging art or a forgotten relic? Inspired by the visuals of classic films, this cinematic video essay is a personal interpretation of the concept with an exploration of its history and traditional use. However, ultimately asking the question, what relevance does the cinematic overture have today?

I agree, there's nothing I love more than sitting down to watch a Hollywood classic and revelling for a moment in the beauty of the musical overtures of a lot of those films. Sort of gets you exited for what's about to come as well. I'm also a big fan of the reintroduction of the intermission, especially in longer films as it not only gives you a moment to go to the toilet but it's also a nice way of reflecting for a moment on the story you're watching, have a quick chat with whoever you're watching it with. Imo all things that can only improve the cinema experience.

Absolutely breathtaking piece, loved how you treated the topic with the same solemn tranquillity that characterized those introductions. Plus the cinematography was exquisite, as someone who adores snow but barely gets to see any, I was in awe for the whole duration and on top of that, this being shot in Northern Italy, dressed by those colossal mountain ranges, brought to mind old westerns such as Il Grande Silenzio. I've been checking your channel after watching this and realized your videos are very similar to what I enjoy creating myself, so I'm already subscribing; but if you keep on bringing this type of essay and alternate between them and the cinematic pieces you are already putting out, you'll be on the road towards being one of my favourite recently discovered artists. Keep up the good work, my friend.

This was like the re-set in the visual pace we all need in order to reflect more in our thinking when watching. You guided the edit so softly and gracefully. Hope this gets traction because I want to see more of it.

I miss overtures and even intermissions… kinda like classic anamorphic lenses in classic cinematography… but there are so many previews before the feature these days… even I might be frustrated. Bjork had an animated abstract in the beginning of Dancer in the Dark years back…it was beautiful.

I don't usually comment on KZbin, but I have to say that this was a well-thought-out and well-produced video! Your introduction and explanation of the topic were soothing and helped to give off a relaxing vibe throughout the video. I also have to say that your cinematography is truly magnificent, from the grand and breathtaking shots of the northern Italian mountains to the simple, detailed beauty of the snowy leaves. It truly shows the strong passion that you have for film as a whole. I was kind of shocked that this only has a few thousand views and that you have a thousand subscribers only. The high quality that you put on this video makes me think that you deserve more. I had the privilege of your video be recommended to me and honestly, thank god I was able to view this! Keep up the amazing work and hope for you the get way more attention!!

Beautiful video. "North by Northwest" had a title sequence, not an overture. Composer Bernard Herrmann just used the word as the title for his piece of main title music, which was not an uncommon practice. But the two shouldn't be confused. A movie like BEN-HUR has both an overture followed by a separate main title sequence. I'll settle for a return of title sequences at this point. Many movies now don't even have any on-screen title at all. I was also surprised that you didn't mention the prevalence of overtures on the stage, particularly for musicals, as that was a significant factor in overtures carrying into roadshow films of the '50 & '60s, which included many Broadway stage musical adaptations.

Overtures need to return, although not in all forms of cinema. I think the epics would definitely suit it. I remeber the first time I watched Dr Zhivago, the overture went for almost 10 minutes, and then there was the mid film overture. The pause in the story was something I was not expecting but I loved it.

I feel like 2001: A Space Odyssey was deliberately poking fun of the notion of the overture settling the movie's environment in the theater, by using Gyorgy Ligeti's unnerving score Lux Aetena, in stark contrast to the grandiose opening with Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra. But at the same time it foreshadows the unsettling predicaments that unfolds later into the movie. Anyway, great video you got there.

Tron: Legacy doesn’t have an overture. The soundtrack album does but that piece of music is only on the album. Unless it was just removed for the DVD and was there in theaters-it’s possible I just forgot it over 15 years-there are a few other tracks on the album that are never heard in the movie so it’s not an outlier. Whether there was supposed to be one and Disney axed it or it was only ever meant for the soundtrack, I don’t know.
@georgecastl
@georgecastl 3 күн бұрын
@@someguyumayknow3 you’re right - the theatrical run of the film included an overture in the US but the overture piece is now only found on the soundtrack. i included a nod to it in this video as the 2000s seemingly marked a point at which the use of overtures slowly made a reappearance
@someguyumayknow3
@someguyumayknow3 3 күн бұрын
@ I wish I remembered the overture, then. Saw it in 3D IMAX back in the day but again it’s been 15 years now, hard to believe. I do remember being almost front row and having to look up lol. Do you know if it had a picture/text or if it was just a black screen (like 2001: A Space Odyssey or Star Trek: The Motion Picture)?
