Up in my neck of the woods - Dunwich is a wonderful place. Very atmospheric and has a history to rival that of London, so much so that it was once more important. To any visitors to the area, I'd recommend a visit to the Museum as they have a model of the old City of Dunwich which shows how big the place was and how much has been lost to the sea. The Priory site is now very close to the cliffs edge, and there used to be a graveyard that has now fallen to the sea. You can easily walk from Dunwich to Walberswick (though the pebble beach is challenging underfoot), Southwold being the other side of the River (which you've covered in a previous video).

Dunwich holds special memories for me. One day many years ago, I think it was the 2nd of January me and three friends set off along the shingle beach towards Dunwich from Walberswick. But the night before, there had been a terrible storm and in places, the beach was washed away leaving sections inundated by waves. On one such section, the then oldest of our party got caught by a wave so myself and my friend Steve went back to rescue him. The tide held him and the sea was throwing rocks the size of tennis balls at us. We all got soaked, I lost a camera to water damage, it was snowing and freezing cold. We struggled on and eventually made it to the Pub, where a fire was roaring in the hearth. restorative coffee and Brandy was then the order of the day. The Leper hospital in particular is an eerie place.

They do say in deepest dark Suffolk on ghostly nights when the wind is howling and the moon is full ,but partially obscured by cloud ! When the wind dies down for a short time you can still hear the bells of Dunwich Church . They say when the church tower fell into the sea , the tower remained up right and the waves could still swing the bells and ring it's chimes out on stormy nights for years afterwards !! Now they can only be heard only occasionally on eerie nights when the moon is full !

Great video Freddie! I’ve been to Dunwich a couple of times, it’s a lovely little village in Suffolk. Was the beach cafe still there? Time Team did a dig there once, where the beach cafe is now there was allegedly originally a “hospital” in Medieval times. If you walk up to the old abbey, you can see where old graves are gradually falling into the sea.

Been here and stayed in the pub 2 or 3 nights in a very neat room and thoroughly enjoyed the beer and breakfast(s). Great place to ride (pedal) bikes with more than enough to keep one interested. The beach café positively throngs in the summer months. On other occasions I used to make a point of visiting the pub after spending time at Sizewell power station just down the road. Southwold is well worth a visit if only to see the onshore lighthouse in the middle of the town.

Aways carry / use cash when possible, we are losing bank braches at an alarming rate so cash machines will gradually follow, small shops, car boots, small change charity boxes, tips, tooth fairy and so on will no longer be there. The big corperations, banks, and shop chains will gradually remove the ability to pay with real money. What better way to manage cash flow than an empty wallet = budget used.
