Hi, Alex. Thanks for this. Fascinating. You mentioned the extension of the road from Moneague to Ochie. There is also a Gully Road, which is the St. Ann's Bay to Claremont main road, which continues on to Moneague and Kgn.

My observation is based on personal experience. I think Fern Gully began as a riverbed and dried out over time. During periods of flood rains, the surface of the roads becomes very slippery. In rural Jamaica many current roads began as foot/donkey paths from the interior to the coastal towns and beyond, then when buggies began traveling through these paths they were widened by the wheel's tracks, then when automobiles came along they expanded to accommodate 2 vehicles passing each other. As to the ferns along the way. I think the climatic conditions fostered their growth and spread. This I think, began as a path developed over time by folks who needed to travel from the interior to the coast. Imagine folks wanting to sell their produce to the coastline population and returning home with seafood and other sought-after items not available in their villages etc. During my childhood years in St Ann's Bay, traveling to Kingston by way of Claremont, Moneague, and Linstead, all the roads were unpaved until entering and exiting townships. Transportation in groups was by trucks. Exiting St Ann's Bay to Lime Hall, the road is referred to (then and now) as Gully Road. The photo you show of the curve at position 9.58 of the video is along the road from Claremont toward Lime Hall. Thanks for sharing your research with us. I've always respected the road conditions traveling through Fern Gully and despite my efforts had several slippery encounters.

I agree with you, it could have been a river bed, but as for the ferns those were planted. Thanks for that interesting comment and thank you for watching. Please share

After leaving Jamaica my home land age 8years old,it was my dreams to return and visit the many areas sold to tourist. Fern gully on the lists i did after arriving in Ochi on a Royal Caribbean cruises ship,i did the Fern Gully tour on a jeep,the rouges ride of my life,but that was soon crushed by the natural beauty of the gully,the greenery along with the viried verity of ferns and plants,on reaching the top the views were so magnificent to behold. I would love to do that ride again but not in the jeep,a more relaxing,slower ride is what i would love.. Keep up the good works of telling the historical facts of beautiful Jamaica.

Thanks for the info this Gully may remain a mystery. I was told Fern Gully was a river bed but later dried up, but you have given more food for thought.
@pamelabroderick87752 жыл бұрын
It definitely was a river bed for most part. I have witnessed the river reclaiming some of its path ⅓ the way up on two occasions about two years apart. Can't remember the years. The water was actually bubbling up in the middle of the road and from the side of rocks annex. You could actually catch it in a container from the rocks. I believe that was caused from a high water table occurring in Moneague as we were having a high level of rainfall during those times. Talk to the craft vendors that operate at the bottom, where "Ready Freddy" is, they will confirm this. I lived in the area and operated a tour during those times. Guests were very elated to see the phenomenon!

Hey bro just a watch the vid. I grew up the that area and the elders always told us that fern gully was a one of the eight rivers. So seeing fern gully on a map without Colgate or Breadnut hill or Harrison town is sketchy. Because Breadnut hill still have a plantation so why would they take the longest route to Ocho Rios which was a small fishing village. Even to this day the shortest way from moneague to Ocho Rios is the route that goes thru breadnut hill. The road came way later because my grandfather used to go fishing. The river died and became a gully. Also there was multiple rivers and ponds. in breadnut hill

There is another “Gully Road” on the way to Boscobel. It is on the right had. The road is very narrow. However, there no germs, just a winding road.

Driving from Ocho Rios south through cool Fern Gully I always experience a blast of hot humid air upon emergence at ColeGate....a big contrast. Decades ago, there were many more gorgeous ferns in the Gully..... For thrills to remember, tourists should ride in a mini-bus tossing and turning through Fern Gully, preferably before meals.

Fern gully was one of the rivers that's a part of Ocho Rios. 8 rivers but dried up over time it's basically a dry river bed it was easier going through the gully to moneague when it wasn't raining and came down full force so they paved it but after heavy rains it was impassable because the river came up but after they cemented it its been good so far just lately starting to dig up. The ferns grew naturally but in 90s they use to be replanted after landslides from heavy rain
@AckeeEater. Жыл бұрын
It's a myth that 8 rivers meet at or near Ocho Rios; the name is a misnomer. It stems from the original Spaniards naming it "Chorreras" which means water rapids (falls). The conquering Anglos must have thought they were hearing "Ocho Rios. 😒 And from what source did you get it that the ferns grew naturally? You can't guess hese things, miss. --Æ.

Wow! If this is the nature of your channel then I'll be a regular. Listen, I strongly suggest you check out The Institute of Jamaica in Kingston. My first job after h.s. in 1969 was with them, which involved mounting dried leaves onto sheets of paper for saving. The Botany dep't was headed by one Mr Proctor, an American who made Jamaica his home (married a J'can woman, has a daughter whom he named "Fern", etc.). He wrote a book called "Pteridophyta", the scientific name for fern. I'll be in Ja in a couple of months and will see what I can find out for you, but if you reside on the island you should inquire of them. --Æ.
