The best was when he got back to Gladys. Doyle does know how to write twists :)

This is my all time favourite novel. The greatest achievement in all literature. It consistently warms my heart to see another so enchanted by its majesty and charm.

I read this sometime in the 90s and loved it, but I don't remember much of it. I'm currently on a dinosaur kick, so I'll probably reread it!

This sounds interesting. I knew Doyle had written other things, but I’ve never read anything besides Sherlock.
@ReadbyFred Жыл бұрын
That's funny because I was the opposite. I knew he had written The Lost World (because I had watched the show), but I didn't know until last year that he had also written Sherlock Holmes. :)

Hi Fred! Just subscribed to your channel. I've never read TLW but love Conan Doyle and especially that whole Golden Era turn of the century adventure writing as the Victorian era/gilded age was ending and the shadow of the Great War with its fear of the alien/other and mechanization was looming on the horizon. Also enjoy The Lost City of Z. PS. None of my business but wondering if you might hail from Canada. I went to U of T and I'm wondering if you're from the great north. Cheers.

Oh wow, I just looked up Lost City of Z by David Grann - I'm going to have to read that this year! Yup, I'm Canadian and, though we've gotten a lot of snow, have been quite happy that we haven't gotten a lot of cold winter days. I'm hoping it's going to be an early Spring :)
@melissamybubbles6139 Жыл бұрын
Wasn't this a wild period? Doyle wasn't even a full century removed from Jefferson, who thought there could still be mammoths lurking in the great plains.
@ReadbyFred Жыл бұрын
Mammoths lurking in the great plains? Wow, the wild period is right. I'll need to pick up the Lost City of Z (Grann) that documents Percy Fawcett's ill fated 1925 adventure to the Amazon looking for that fabled city.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, despite his academic background, was a firm believer in spiritualism and even good friend Harry Houdini who continually exposed them as frauds couldn’t convince him otherwise.
@ReadbyFred Жыл бұрын
I read that too. Spiritualism was big during the late 19th and early 20th century so I'm not surprised he was a believer. I have a number of Agatha Christie stories on spiritualism that I plan on reading for March Mystery Madness - I'll be doing a TBR hopefully soon :)

In a moment of hilarious irony, one of the “hey, watch these too” thumbnails as I watch this is for Mia Mulder on “Is masculinity in crisis?”. Challenger would say not. :)
