The Lotus Temple, Delhi, India
The Lotus Temple was built in Delhi, India in 1986 and is a Baha'i house of worship, and is open to all, regardless of their religion. The project of the Bahá'í House of Prayer was inspired by the lotus - an extremely beautiful flower, a symbol of purity, which is inextricably linked to worship in India. The temple is located among nine large pools of water, which not only emphasize the beauty of the building, but also play a significant role in the natural cooling system of the prayer hall. What all Baha'i Houses of Prayer have in common is that they all have nine sides. Nine is the largest single-digit number and symbolizes comprehensiveness, single-mindedness and unity. In the Lotus House of Prayer, the Holy Scriptures of the Baha'i Faith are read or recited according to a previously prepared program. Guests are invited to meditate and pray silently. Neither talks nor ritual ceremonies are permitted in the prayer hall.
