I was going through your old videos the other day and saw this video and remembered that I had wanted to read this book! I have been craving a long epic book to dig into this Autumn so I went and bought this book today. Thanks for this great recommendation I always enjoy the reviews you do.👏🏽😊

I read "Love Songs.." this summer and LOVED it! Even after 800+ pages, I didn't want it to end!

I loved this one too! It is a very intimidating size, but there is also something lovely about being immersed in a book for so long. I did the audio, and the narration was also great. I did not think about how I relate to the academic part of it because of my background, but you are right, maybe that is also part of my enjoyment.

I think the book is potentially even darker than you conclude. I read it not long after it came out, and saw the many comments about it being torture porn, but that didn't sit right so tried to find out the author's intent. Somewhere I read something that makes Willem almost as important to the book as Jude - because it's not just about the loss of hope, but the possibility that love is not enough. Jude has some extraordinarily kind people in his life, and Willem is at the top of that list, doing his utmost to, for want of a better word, help Jude because he truly loves him. Willem is a good, strong man so that if even his love can't do the job, what good is love?

Excellent review! This sounds great. What would you say your favorite genres to read are?

Ooo! That’s a tough question, as you can see from my videos my taste is pretty eclectic. I think if I had to literary fiction teaches me the most about life and culture etc. But horror books are what got me into reading at a young age… so they will always have a top spot for me
