Let's of not forget Abe Saffron's 'fixer' (as he was known) Detective Inspector Doug Knight of the NSW Police who ordered the site cleared before an investigation could be carried out by fire officers, and against all objections from fire and police authorities. He decided it was an electrical fire within just hours of the tragedy happening, and didn't allow any authorities to investigate. Those of us here in Sydney all know exactly who who did it and covered it up.

Highly recommend watching 'Exposed: The Ghost Train Fire'. The interviews from Jenny Godson and James Holman, as well as the staff of the ride that night, are absolutely heartbreaking. What's sadder still is that those responsible are all dead now, so no justice will ever truly be done. (Iirc, Jenny was supposed to be on the ride with her family, she expected to get ice cream and then join them in the line, but when she came back, they had already boarded without her) The number of developers that have fought to gain ownership of the park absolutely sickens me. Sadly, even after 50 years, we're still fighting the same battles.

It was an amazing documentary. I sobbed like a baby several times. I think the show got it right, unfortunately, it just seems too suspicious for it to be a true accident. At the very least, I want those "good" names who were involved to have that be the first thing said about them whenever anyone mentions them. Indeed, that documentary is superb, extremely well-researched and revealing. I remember that fire well as I had been to Luna Park only a couple of weeks previously (I was 19 yo at the time). I'd ridden the Ghost Train while I was there, which as a teen I thought was twee and cheesy, but it was a distinctly eerie feeling to hear about the fire and such a terrible loss of life, especially such young life, just two weeks later. Some of the recollections of those who did escape the fire are chilling. It would have been a horrendous place to be in during a fire - dark, confined and labyrinthine. Nightmare fuel.

I watched the documentary about this incident and one of the things that I've never been able to forget was that there was a small fenced in area near the queue where the cars in the ride would come into view and then go back into the building. Since they left the cars running, people watched as riders rode out into that area thinking they might be getting to safety, and then be taken back into the inferno.

Luna Park didn't open again until I was a teenager, and I spent my whole childhood asking my mum why we couldn't go to the fun looking circus place. She would always tell me what happened, and how she drove past on the bridge on the night of the fire and could hear the screaming, so she refused to go there even after it opened. I took my brother there so many times, and it taught me that I really wasn't missing out on the whole theme park thing. It's such a beautiful spot though, and it's kind of hard to imagine the horror that happened there. I too recommend watching the documentary mentioned. I cried many times, it's just too awful. Corruption was rampant at that point in NSW history (though it always is), so it's not really a stretch to believe this was no accident. The fish rots from the head.

Not having sprinklers was unforgiveable - fairgrounds, like piers - have historically always been very vulnerable to fire, especially because of all the wood. And of course they are always filled with people. Steeplechase Park in Coney Island, NY was completely destroyed by fire in the early part of the last century and rebuilt. Likewise other Coney Island parks Dreamland in 1911 and Astroland in 1975. The original Luna Park in Coney Island burned n 1944, closing after the fire destroyed half the park. There was also the infamous 'dark ride' fatal fire at the Haunted Castle at Six Flags New Jersey in the mid 80s.

They are correct... pretzel rides, especially the early ones, were absolutely notorious for catching fire, for the reasons mentioned in the video. This is not the first, nor the worst such incident, though it's more recent than most. Retrofitting these rides to modern standards is extremely expensive, to where it's often cheaper to just replace the ride, which is why at this point there are few in operation. Given how much trouble Luna Park was having just keeping their gates open, I'm sure they did what they could.

This was truly tragic. I feel so bad for everyone involved, all the parents of those teenaged boys, and the mother who survived. I have a teenaged son myself, so both of those perspectives hit very hard. However, I will say I noticed one positive aspect: There were 35 people in that ride, when smoke was noticed. Yes, 7 of them lost their lives. But the other 28 lived. They were saved, rescued by ride attendants who didn't run away in fear, but kept their heads and stayed at the unloading station, in the smoke, pulling people out, until the very last second. I know those people had their own trauma and PTSD to deal with. But they lived. Nearly 30 lives spared. Thirty sets of loved ones who didn't have to hear the devastating news that they'd lost someone dear to them. Thirty families who weren't shattered forever. Because of a few brave amusement park employees. They didn't have to stay. They were probably only getting paid minimum wage. They surely weren't trained for emergencies. They were most likely teenagers, or young men/women, barely starting out in the real world. I wouldn't have blamed them if they ran, whether for other help, or just to save themselves. But they didn't. They stood their ground and faced the demon, head on. And nearly 30 people lived, because of that. Those brave workers should be commended. I hope the survivors, and the surviving loved ones of the lost, have found some peace. May those who didn't make it out Rest in Paradise. And may those who allowed/caused this tragedy, whether by neglect, greed, or direct involvement, receive the karma they deserve. Even if it's not doled out until after they themselves depart this life...

Scary and sad story. A lot of grief and sadness for the parents and families. One hopes all safety standards are being met there, today.

I remember this story from other channels. That story about the husband and kids and wife always brings a tear to my eye. Such a tragic story. I just can't even imagine how helpless and devastated she must have felt. As an aside, I grew up in New Jersey and still live here, and everyone here knows the story of the Six Flags Haunted Castle, which had a tragically similar story.

@drt160526 күн бұрын
@kiosk241-n9p it is not iconic though in its current vastly diminished form. I lived on the lower north shore for 6 years and never went. When you have the opera house and harbour bridge the current Luna Park is hardly noteworthy. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against amusement parks but most locals around there aren't a fan of it.

CORRECTION: Luna Park was closed in 1979 and everything except the face entrance, Crystal Palace and Coney Island was bulldozed and destroyed. Harbourside Amusement Park replaced it in 1982. The use of the land and face entrance was plagued by legal disputes and HAP was closed in 1988. Luna Park, after being reconstructed, was reopened in 1995 and closed just 12 months later. More legal shenanigans ensued. It opened a few times for weekends and school holidays in 2000/2001 under strict conditions by order of the courts. Finally it reopened in 2004 while only closing briefly during COVID.

I believe "Honest Abe" did get hold of the land via a shelf company, and sold most of the rides. Some of these were irreplaceable historic items, like the carousel. Friends of Luna Park managed to get some of them back but not others.

This brought back memories of the Haunted Castle fire at 6 Flags in NJ in 1984. It was a walk-thru ride that was also a tinderbox with a convoluted path throughout the ride, some areas in pitch darkness. The fire killed 8 teenagers.

I watched the documentary a few months back. The mother of the family notes that she had been intending to go with her boys and husband but was struck by an overwhelming urge to go get ice cream instead. The interview with the sole member of the gang of friend was heartbreaking. I saw the collection of information and... christ there was so, SO much going on behind the scenes.

Over the last handful of years, I have had lots of second thoughts about going in places that seem overcrowded or that would be hard to get out of quickly if there was a fire. Like haunted houses, dance clubs, buuldings with circular staircases and a lot of people. Generally when people have events like dance clubs, raves etc they never care to count or worry about the occupancy. Even if there was spinklers and a fire there still would be a mass trampling. Its hese stories of getting caught in a building that make me decide not to... One of my worst fears is being caught in a building

@@Die-Angst Oh yes. I have lingering PTSD from the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes I'm sure and still don't like watching movies that have things like building collapses (but I will watch FH videos about them, I guess because he treats them more seriously). It's wild how many bridges in particular have been under-maintained over the years, across multiple countries, so you can never really know how safe a structure is.
