Way back in the middle/late 80's, I was the relief Manager of the Red Lion (I think it was called) on the crossroads in Avebury I walked around the encircling mound at midnight (or later) with someone else's wife trying to persuade her to sleep with me . She was having none of that , but it sticks in my mind as a very unusual, misty evening ; where one could FEEL something. We both commented on it as we walked home after my unsuccessful attempts. :)

Wish I'd watched this before we visited last weekend. BUT it is a powerful site - I visited over 30 years ago with my young son and came away "high as a kite" - so energised and just bursting with goodwill. I feel the interpretation of the whole area is poor (though this is Covid year so the Museum sadly was closed) and like one of your other viewers, I had no idea that the village covered the whole area. Well done Kneller! We walked along the Stone Avenue and then turned up the hill to view the magical Silbury Hill on the other side. Sadly some folks obviously can't read because there were several people climbing it. Our pilgrimage continued with the West Kennett barrow, the Sanctuary, Woodhenge, Durrington Walls and of course, Stonehenge. But to me, the power and the majesty still remains with Avebury. Thanks for your video, now to find some others from you!

I too feel drawn inexplicably to Avebury and have done for many years. I haven't managed a visit this year because of lockdown and am missing it very much. Hopefully next year.

We drove through the village on Tuesday, I had no idea it was there. This was my first visit to the area and I was so taken with the area. Unfortunately we couldn't stop as we were heading back to Scotland. I'll definitely be back for a proper visit to see these monuments and the rest of the sites. Like you say there's something there which draws you back. I used to wonder why my friend relocated to this area, and now I know. Thanks for the videos.

I came here to start the Ridgeway last year and thought it was absolutely beautiful. Didn't have a lot of time there so will need to go back and explore some of the sites shown in this video.

I need to walk the ridge way. Thanks for the tip!

Wow! I learnt stuff I didn't know, namely the extent of the medieval village in the circle. That must make the archaeological surveys that much harder.

Our environmental memories get put into our dna and get passed on again and again and again. Pagans call this blood memory. So the strange feeling people get in such places is how a polar bear in a zoo feels when it sees snow for the first time... its familair to it, without it ever seeing it before. I'm also pretty sure that's the strange feeling people get in old buildings that make people think they are haunted.

So fascinating! I've always had such a curiosity about these type of stone circles. Wonder if they will ever discover the real reason & purpose of them. Remember seeing a documentary a few yrs back on the making of Stonehedge & how they did an actual reenactment of modern man rolling these 100 ton stones on logs for several miles. They then constructed a primitive wood pulley system where it actually took very little effort to pull them to sit straight up. It was mind boggling!🤔

Heading here next week Richard on a trip with my Archaeology class. Very much looking forward too it, should be fascinating. No pub for us though unfortunately haha. Would have loved to have bragging rights of drinking in the only pub within a neolithic stone circle :)

Drone footage would greatly have enhanced this video. From other videos of yours, I know that you have access to the technology.

Really very interesting, rob knows his stuff. It occurs to me that what we see today is largely a 20th century re-creation - did this ‘restore’ the ‘power /aura /feelings’ of people? Would there be as much interest if someone hadn’t come along and concreted the stones upright and removed houses close to the stones?

Interesting point!

Very interesting point there, although it was a 20th Century task to re-erect the Stones they are all in the original positions (the stones that were left that is) based on Antiquarian William Stukely's 18th Century sketches of the place and the foot prints of the sarsens. Names like The Cove, The Sanctuary and The Obelisk are all from his when he was surveying the site.
