Guinevere Turner is an acclaimed screenwriter and director. She co-wrote the screenplays for American Psycho and The Notorious Bettie Page and, most recently, wrote the screenplay for Charlie Says. She also wrote and starred in the film Go Fish and was a writer and actor on Showtime’s The L Word. An essay she wrote for The New Yorker is the inspiration for this memoir. Nice to hear from someone who grew up in the group. I was listening to a podcast about Charles Manson a couple years ago and the host mentioned Manson's envy of how Mel Lyman was running his cult in Roxbury, Massachusetts...as someone who grew up in Boston, went to school in Roxbury and as an Urban Explorer I had to know more about this. I visited Fort Hill, the homes the group renovated are still there with the original street number signs and their own private gate. The wall Mel ordered to be built outside his home is still there. The Tower is still there and in good shape however I was unable to go up in it. It's a wonderful surprise to know that I've seen and enjoyed Guinevere's work prior to knowing she was in the group.

I didn't know Ms. Turner at Sarah Lawrence but I am aquainted with actors who have worked with her. I found myself offended that instead of reading reviews to gain perspective, she chose to respond defensively. I also was taken aback that she seemed to diminish survivors of divorce -- instead of being open to recognizing the parallels we all experience through trauma, whatever those traumas might be. I greatly appreciate the insights offered by the host.

Great interview! It is interesting how these cults ‘carry on’ even in the absence or death of their founders. Like New Kadampa whose founder is sequestered with advanced dementia or this place called Blue Mountain Center… How well one knows the ‘knot’ in the stomach she talks about.
