This band always has a way to lift my spirits, I discovered them back when people still used MySpace, a time I discovered other bands like Ensiferum, Moonsorrow, Korpiklaani, Eluveitie, Týr and others. As an additional note their lyrics are always about trolls and their battle against Christianity.

Seconded. Finntroll and Skyclad were my introduction to folk metal in 2001. The idea of metal plus polka (humppa) blew my mind. Lyric-wise, yes, every song is about trolls (or other similar folkloric creatures) fighting off the encroachment of Christian man (at least for the first 10 years of their discography, I haven’t really kept up on the lyrics since then, but I think it’s pretty similar). Sometimes it’s nasty, sometimes it’s introspective, usually it’s a little sardonic. They always have a sense of humor. In this case, the contrast is between the night sky (black depths) and gentle folk sounds overseeing a massacre. Of course, since it’s Finntroll, the monstrous trolls are the heroes, ascending from the depths of the earth to slaughter the invading Christians/humans. The violence is purgative, cleansing, and natural peace is restored following the carnage. It’s subversive, juxtaposing death and peace, but also in creating this fantasy world as a response to and rejection of the often-violent and incomplete Christianization of the north. After all, the band’s one-time slogan translates to “Begone you who shine light over my people.”

Cool ❤ As a full album lover I'd like to recommend their album Midnattens Widunder. It was a huge album for me in my youth. At the time it was very cool concept of brutal music with folk influences and you can already hear their own sound! Thanks again for the reaction, I really do appreciate your takes and they have introduced me to new music and its always nice to hear new perspectives on the familiar stuff. Thanks! ❤

This whole EP is fantastic, it's also a very different style of music from the usual blackened folk metal they play. It's one of those releases I still listen to every once in a while even though I don't listen to folk metal that often any more. That reminds me that it has been a while since I have played through it, I will probably do so before going to bed. Also, as far as folk goes, I can not help to mention Tenhi which is (also a Finnish) band that I discovered while I was discovering Folk Metal and I started discovering Black Metal together with bands like Nest and Wardruna. I still love Tenhi to this day and it is my most listened to artist according to the site where you scrobble tracks (which I can't mention on this platform) and I have been using it for close to 20 years now. A lot of the folk I discovered during that time works really well for me to get into the right mood to go to bed and not because it's boring, but it just helps me relax for some reason and I use it a lot for that. Edit: and no, I had no clue about the lyrics since I never looked them up. I didn't really see it coming although I know their other work which generally has a lot of harsh vocals, so I am also not extremely surprised either.

Some of the people of note here are Katla, the original vocalist and lighter-voiced of the two on this song, who had to retire after tumours were found on his vocals cords, and (Tapio) Wilska, who is the deeper voice of the two in this song and would sing the following 'normal' album, Nattfödd (Wilska was also the regular male-secondary-vocalist for Nightwish on songs like Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean, or Pharaoh Sails to Orion, until Marko Hietala took on the role). The composition is by Henri "Trollhorn" Sorvali, best known for also playing as a central member of Moonsorrow. Finntroll has a very unique sound but a lot of it is conventionally black/folk metal. If you are interested in more songs of theirs, some recommendations are Hel Vete (weird pseudo-Foetus troll hell brass), Ur Bergets Rot (swingier folkier stuff), Grottans Barn (slower and doomier) or Slaget Vid Blodsälv (hectic and pronouncedly trollish).

One of the last songs Katla was singing... had makes me cry, after Katla revealed that he has Throat-cancer on these time. Svart Djup means "dark depth"
