The tank is an instrument in combat, the crew is what makes the tank lethal. I used to be a tank commander back in the late 90s on the M1A1 Abrams. My favorite positions is first being the gunner then being the commander. Before becoming one of the two senior positions all tankers must be proficient in maintaining the tank and the weapons systems first. As a crew the driver is the most junior position where he knows the tank commander and gunner to drive to favorable terrain and firing positions under the direction of the TC. The loader must load the main gun as fast as possible and the second set of eyes for the commander and responsible for the radios. His secondary responsibility is being the gunner if the gunner is taken out of action. Every crew member is capable of doing two to three jobs above their positions. This teaches junior members to learn and move into leadership positions in the future. The tank commander has to be technically and tactically proficient because his tank would be able to step up as Platoon Sergeant or Platoon Leader. I did enjoy gunnery during my years in Armor but the worst part is maintaining the tank has always been problematic and intensive from my experience.
@stanmans8 ай бұрын
Reddevil I was also a tank commander but i go way back a few years. The late 50's and early 60's. Back then the M48 Patton. 90mm and a 50 cal machine gun for the commander. A great tank for its time. It was easy to operate compared to the Abrams. The interior was painted white. A crew of four,commander, gunner, loader and driver. Keeping it clean was the biggest issue and a few bruises from getting banger around. Stationed at Ft. Knox Ky. I admire the tankers of today for their skill and dedication.

@SpicyLunarDust8 ай бұрын
Gun. Tank destroyers use a higher velocity gun with Sabot “sounds like say-bow” ammunition.
@fizzmoe98468 ай бұрын
@@SpicyLunarDust That is incorrect. Tanks use sabot rounds just as much as tank destroyers could or would. A tank destroyer typically uses a larger main gun that doesn’t fit inside a mobile, rotating turret. It’s basically an anti tank gun with some tracks slapped on it and a bit of armor at the front.
@SpicyLunarDust8 ай бұрын
@@fizzmoe9846 It’s extremely vague but not wrong. There’s so many different facets to this, tank destroyers aren’t just limited to Sabot ammunition, there’s also HEAT, APFSDS-T, APDST, AP, and a number others. The Sabot just being the plastic around the projectile as it fires. There certainly are plenty of fixed gun tank destroyers, actually most were, but not all tank destroyers are fixed gun. And as far as increasing the caliber of the weapon, again that does happen, but what designates a tank destroyer is its Muzzle Velocity”. The US considered the M4A3E8 a “Tank Destroyer” but it only had a 1mm increase from its 75mm gun (still a huge difference), but the muzzle velocity was almost doubled.

I wish we could get shows “Wings”, “Firepower” and “Tales of the Gun” but with modern video and information. Get rid of the “show host” and bring back the “Narrator” with just facts about the equipment.

The Abrams has always been something of a joke in NATO. Firstly the Gas Turbine gives off a lot of heat which is easily detected and targeted. Secondly the Abrams needs to be followed by a fuel tanker, the 65 mile range is pathetic for a modern tank. Though ammunition fires may not destroy the tank, it does require a re-build taking many months, so far 35 tanks have been battle casualties.

Cool, not that it matters when you have stealth bombers and nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers. If the states were in a full fledge war tanks wouldn’t even play a factor. They’d park a few numclear subs on ur coast and send ballistics missles from below the surface.

Where did you come up with a 65 mile radius?
@billballbuster718619 күн бұрын
@@vanpearsall That was the specification 65 miles cross country. I am not sure but they may have got it up to 92 miles on the M-1A2?
@vanpearsall19 күн бұрын
@@billballbuster7186 we averaged around 150 miles, but we were mostly on paved roads, former M1 A1 tanker
@billballbuster718618 күн бұрын
@@vanpearsall My info was the combat reports from Desert Storm which stated 65 miles was average on flat desert. A lot less than other tanks like Challenger which could manage 170 miles off road on internal fuel, or 230 miles with the rear aux tanks.

Roflmfao, you do know this tank didn't even last 2 months against Russia before being chased completely off the battlefield right? No? Okay cool story bro 👍 😂
