Garands don’t like to be coddled. Best Infantry rifle on the planet. First one I held, favorite caliber, only the addition of a box magazine was needed. It’s a real rifle, M14 was all we had, until the plastic Mattel’s started showing up. These iconic rifles were real Battle Rifles. I love my AR, but only one rifle for me if I have to choose. Belt fed would be even better.

This brought back the memories of having a Garand blow up while I was firing it. Not quite as spectacular as yours but with similar result. It froze the brass case in the chamber, vented through the case head and cracked both locking lugs. Gas blew out the floorplate and ruptured the stock similarly to yours. Injury was a cauterized burn to the the left wrist. It was January, so winter clothing shielded some.

What’s absolutely surprising to me is that the most failure prone part of the garand with high pressure, the operating rod, survived mostly. At least didn’t fail in the normal high pressure way. All due to the bolt giving before the bullet reached the gas port
