I think nissan designed the car with petrol heads in mind , almost a factory modified type car , its low, it comes with factory sub and huge stereo, TV, and alloy wheels , just shy of 300hp is not a family car in Japan in 2004 either . FYI they drink petrol like crazy if you drive like I do

I own one of these for the mountain roads here in the South Island of NZ, nicknamed the maroonicorn (thanks to its colour), just like this lowered on 19s. I bought it after having an R32 Gtr for many years and when you slide it across and hold it in 3rd, especially downhill it is easy as fast as the Gtr through the corners as it doesn't have the weight in the front, and has much more advanced atessa, with roll sensors that the earlier Gtr doesn't have (not sure about the 34/35). And everything mechanical is very similar to Z chassis. Plan to supercharge mine, and next step is some bucket seats. The best feature has to be no one even looks twice at it!

I do like both the Stagea's though, I'd possibly take them over a V70 and the like if I were in the market for that kind of car in the same way I would seriously look at a Nissan Skyline saloon or Toyota Chaser, all well engineered and not common on our roads which really appeals to me.

JayEmm on cars says there is no manual version of the M35, there is one known as the Autech Axis M35 Manual version which are rare to find. But you can get the odd one in australia.......
@russpearson98025 жыл бұрын
Good luck with trying to find one lads. There was one for sale in Brisbane last year, a nice white one personal import I believe 85,000 klm 20, grand. It was originaly advertised in 2017 at 38 grand. The best research I could do was that there was 4 in australia at that time. The autech axis 6 speed is still not raws certified (next year it will be exempt as it will be over 15 yrs old) because it is a 3.5 motor in a 2.5 chassis, or some such rubbish . Something like 764 were made in total, with the black being the premium color of which there were a limited 176 made at the begining of the production run in 2003/4. I don't know what the turbo 2.5 is like ive never driven one, but that 3.5 donk with the six speed box is a real horse of a car. Give it some stick and it fucking hums. The brakes could be better at speed that's for sure. Not braggin but I know this because I have owned a twin sun roof black one(very early build no), for nearly 3 years, the 3rd or 4th registered one in australia I think. I would like to put a procharger on it(10 grand), just to make it that little bit different. I recently went from adelaide to Sydney. Very very nice well balanced car with shit loads of torquey grunt. The only complaint I had driving over, was that at 200 clicks she gets very light and squirelly, but at normal speeds it is as flat square and solid as yu want. Here's an idea for yu, this is what I am thinking of doing, im not sure if they bought out a autech axis 5 speed triptronic 4 wd/steer version, all the better if they did, if yu could get yor hands on one. But find yorself a good 2005to7 4 wheel drive/steer staggie (AR-X 4 wd, sse) black interior, below 100,000 klm. I have seen them on carsales for 10 to 12 grand, even as less as 5 grand for up to 200,000 klm. (about the cost of buying a sub 100,000 klms one at auction in japan+ shipping compliance rego etc)find a good spares 6 speed 350z box, around 1500 bucks, rip the trip tonic out , wack the 6 speeder in , wind down the coilovers, jack up the wheels to 20 inch and bingo, for say 10 or 12 grand (depending on purchase price),yu get a 4 wd/steer.3.5 n/a, 6 speed autech staggie. Nice very nice. Spend another ten grand for the supercharger fitted and for 20 grand, the cost of importing a 6 speeder autech axis (round 20 grand, they are very hard to find at aucton in japan), yu get something that is very much a one off, is the very ultimate sleeper, and done right yu would think the resale value would be preety fucking good. Got me stumped why they didn't do the 4 wheel steer/drive package, or offered a turbo version in the axis 6 speeder in the first place. That would have put it right at another level or 2 in 2002/4. This 3.5 6 speed drives and reminds me of the old school aussie cars, I grew up with in the 70's and 80s, before high tech really took over.

Very interesting video, didn't know the later Stageas have the VQ engine in it. The sound of these is amazing in the 350Z, especially from the outside. But after a test drive, I was a bit underwhelmed of the performance. Felt kind of lazy and needed quite high revs for decent acceleration. I guess this ones even heavier and therefore probably slower. Still... Gotta love that sound 😎

Stageas are a bit of a parts bin, to be honest. :D But yeah, first generation (S1 and S2) Stageas shared a good number of parts with the contemporary Skylines (R33 for the S1, R33 and R34 for the S2). They were based off the C35 Laurel platform, though, as far as chassis is concerned.

Thanks for the video, I enjoy most of your reviews and can normally find myself agreeing with your point of view. I sense you were a bit kind to this one though. Perhaps because its novel to have one in the UK. Unlike the UK, they are very common here in NZ where we bottom feed used cars from Japan. I had the displeasure of driving a couple of different Stagea's a few years back and found them to be very far from sporty in any way, they do not drive anything like the 350Z or a European equivalent. I can imagine the mods done to tis one would make it a bit sportier but I can not see how they could have improved the horrible over assisted steering. If you ever make it down under, I recommend a drive of a Holden or HSV Wagon.

I wish more JDM imports were available with a manual 'box... Has anyone converted a rwd version with the 350z 6 speed? To have a large capacity, nice sounding, responsive petrol engine hindered by slow-shifting, throttle slurring autoboxes is tantamount to sacrilege in my book. That said, I do think these look great.. yes and the wheels too!
@brotherdavid45 жыл бұрын
Yes there was a very limited amount that an aftermarlet firm did i Japan. Also a few has made the swap themselves. Abit tricky getting around the ecu and tcu so its better to go aftermarket ecu when doing that.
@popuptoaster5 жыл бұрын
Autos are alright with a big torquey engine, they are not hindered in most real life driving, if you want speed off the line an auto can be quicker and if you are overtaking you just learn to stamp your foot down a bit earlier than you would in a manual so the box downshifts as you start to pull out. Its more that you cant balance the car through corners like you can in a manual that can slow you down a little if you are really pushing, having said that I have an E55 AMG estate car and I defy anyone who's driven one to call it slow despite the old style slushbox.
@brotherdavid45 жыл бұрын
@@popuptoaster I agree, had a ride in an old CLS55 and it was far from sluggish. The M35 has plenty of TCU comfort settings so getting rid of those (slow but smooth shifts, throttle limited to 30% if both gas and brake pedal are pressed from a stand still and so on) and getting a transmission shift kit tights everything up and makes all the difference. That along with fitting pedal shifters at the steering wheel and its a whole new experience in manual mode.
