The "MACH-71" Super Perforator Slug - TESTED

Kyle from northern California fabricated a projectile.
He calls these the "Mach-71" slugs as a tribute to the SR-71 jet. The design actually gives these slugs some surprising attributes such such as penetration and also expansion of the aerodynamic body.

I suspect these would be banned as a concept but it is difficult to know how any legislation would be worded without banning a lot of other legitimate ammo. This is why we have many gun laws which make no sense; an attempt to make a general law which took no account of collateral and unintended application. In a gun-fight, the only winners are lawyers.

@matthewspencer5086
@matthewspencer5086 Жыл бұрын
I would advocate the hardened steel over the tungsten, because the balance is so close to perfect as it is, that it would be silly to change it. But when the Royal Navy adopted the .5" Vickers cartridge, Vickers offered them an "AP" round with a hardened steel core and a "practice" round with a mild steel core which was intended to fly to exactly the same point of aim for half the price. The latter went clean 18mm ship's plate at 300 yards, which was all the Royal Navy wanted, so they renamed it "semi-armor-piercing" and made it standard. The hardened core did better on face-hardened armour, but not very much better, and no fifty-calibre of any sort is actually a threat to an armoured warship, so the AP round was made in modest quantities and probably only supplied to units that actually asked for it.

That round is as close to a two stage rocket as you can get. The steel core just clings to most of the force being accelerated ahead of the aluminum exterior shell, and it makes up the bulk of it's force. That said, the aluminum shell itself is doing an incredible job of dumping it's inertia into the target (IE: The jelly block) while the core just burrows in deep. I'd have loved to see the state of some of those penetrated rounds that made it off into the distance, I'd imagine the aluminum would have been pressed back and inwards around the core to not have split off.

Kyle is a machinist. He has his stuff together! I figure he thought to have a hardened projectile that's pressed into a traveler, that will not melt in the shotgun, but, with the help of an old shotgun shell wrapped around it, it will spin out of the barrel and bury itself deep. Then, when the outside carrier nose flares & stops, it opens the press fit, & the inertia spits the hardened projectile on forward till the PUSH wears out! I'm a retired tool-designer & I imagine a lot of thought went into this punkin'-ball slug. 🙌🏁 Bill, from Tn., 🇺🇸

It definitely needs a tungsten core. I also think copper would be better than aluminum and score it 2/3 of the way down so maybe it will expand. I was also thinking a slightly smaller tungsten core with tiny steel rods around it that would fragment off. It would be a triple threat... expanding slug, fragmentation, and a penetrator.

Lots of suggestions, here is mine. I have been shooting for about 69 years, including shooting a hole in ½" carbon steel with an ordinary soft nose bullet. Weatherby’s old catalog from 1960 had some information about that, I do not know if they are still showing that. I agree that tungsten would be good, very high density and reasonably hard. You could make the slugs about 0.64 X the diameter of the steel slug and have the same weight (keeping the length the same). Tungsten carbide is almost as hard as diamond, but its density is a little lower than pure tungsten. I doubt that the aluminium cup is important, unless you can make it stay attached to the core to provide expansion. I suggest you just make plastic sabots - perhaps PTFE, as suggested below, although I think Remington and others may have used something else, maybe Nylon. Nylon 6/6 would probably be good, and you can buy it already filled with the solid lubricant, molybdenum disulfide, and other additives. For maximum velocity, nothing beats a sabot - while giving us the aerodynamic advantage of a sub-caliber bullet. One more point about loading, I noticed that you selected a type and quantity of powder to get the desired results - which some people overlook when using sabots. Think of the fun we can have!
