They Got Away With Murder

When Olive Young was murdered in a basement flat in West London early on 6th March 1922, police were quickly on the trail of the main suspect: Ronald True. He was caught easily that same evening. The evidence against him was compelling: he had been dropped off at her flat the evening before and was seen at the flat the following morning - and when caught he had the jewellery stolen from her flat in his coat pocket. His suit was blood-stained also. There was only one thing that could save Ronald True from the hangman's noose: a plea of insanity...

Imagine meeting such a handsome well-dressed, likely well-spoken man - only to discover that he is in fact out of his mind, possibly dangerous. He was insane for sure, but definitely knew right from wrong. And his attempt to delay discovery of Olive's body means he intended to elude justice. I _do- believe he had compulsions that he could barely control. He should have been institutionalized years earlier, but it seems his mother just wanted him away from her and supported his wandering.

He was evil if he knew right from wrong then he could not be deemed insane. Someone that is insane for example will not do anything to hide the crime or to avoid detection they would be a raving lunatic. Also the legal definition of insanity is you don't know right from wrong. Like serial killers I believe they are not insane but they are evil and I believe some people are born without a conscience. Mini psychopaths are not insane but they can pass a lie detector test Gary Leon Ridgway the Green River killer that butchered between 48 and 73 people passed a lie detector test with flying colors. Psychopaths are not insane they're just evil. Many of them definitely know right from wrong and they take great pains to avoid detection. They don't want their killings to stop they have no conscience and if it makes them feel good they will not hesitate.

He was a psychopath and therefore mentally Disturbed but if he knew right from wrong then he could not be deemed insane. I'm not sure if Great Britain has the same protocols but in the United States the only way you can use an insanity defense is if you don't know right from wrong. I believe psychopaths are quite sane but they are manipulative and definitely evil. They lack of conscience that is how they pass lie detector tests. Gary Leon Ridgway the Green River killer who killed between 48 and 73 people passed a lie detector test with flying colors. If you make any attempt to hide the body or avoid detection then you cannot use an insanity defense in the United States. There is a difference in being mean and evil and lack of conscience and insane although both are mentally ill.

This is only the second vid on this channel that I've watched and I am beyond impressed.. I'm gobsmacked!! What an amazing production, such high standards in every aspect. The depth of your research would make your channel outstanding all by itself. However there's then wonderful script writing, and narration. To have "real person" narration really adds to enjoyment of the script. I also liked, very much, the way you humanized them all. Not only the victims and their families, but Ronald and his mum too. The description of them, walking on the terraces, was evocative. I had a lot of sympathy for that lady, but it's a good thing, I think, that her requests for him to be released failed. Sorry for the essay, I'm really enthused to have found such a great new(to me) channel. And you've got new(to me) cases, which is great. In still quarantining, due to being a high risk person, and I find myself lately wanting to whine like a little child,"I'm bored! I've watched *all* the internet! I'm bored! I want something *new*, NOW! Now I've found it, and I'm very appreciative, Many thanks, and kudos all round.

Broadmoor sounds great! - theatre society, rose garden and servant! The "gentleman's ward"!!! What a strange man - fascinating story of his life, you've managed to dig up a lot of info on him. The whole pilot/flying thing is extraordinary. How on earth was he employed as a test pilot after his 3 crashes at Farnborough, and then even more mystifying, employed as a flying instructor in the States! It's a shame he didn't take the stand during his trial because it would be interesting to hear what he had to say for himself. Probably that the other Ronald True did it. True is so fascinatingly odd that he's worthy of a book, I think (hint!). Wonderful story-telling as always, and I can see how much research went into this. Superb. Thanks very much for all your time and skill that goes into these documentaries. :)

Thanks a lot, Mel! It was news to me, too - I knew that conditions can be relaxed in Broadmoor and there is a lot of latitude given to sociable, functioning patients - but "gentleman's ward" and a batman?! They held dances there too and the men dressed up in bow ties and the women in ballroom gowns... I think a TV drama would work for this...

Thank you, Peri - I'm so glad you enjoyed it! That's interesting you have found an old book on True - is it the 'Penguin Notable British Trials' series? If so, it is prefaced by a very good article by a barrister called Donald Carswell. It is marred only by its lacking the details of True's parentage (Lady de Freyne was discreetly kept out of the trial entirely - and his aunt Grace Angus gave evidence on her behalf, which is rather curious!) and what became of True during his period in Broadmoor, for obvious reasons. If it is another book, then I do not know of it and would be intrigued! True's father William True, outlived his son, but his family tell me that they don't think he had anything further to do with his son.

This case was very sad. It's sad to know that this man might have never committed the horrible murder of an innocent woman if he had gotten help early in his life like he probably would've gotten now in our modern society.

I'm just getting to know your work and it just gets better and better. On Ronald True, an author would not dare to create such a character, nobody would believe it, but truth be known I've known a few types that measure up quite closely to Mr. True. This world is a very strange, fascinating and sometimes lethal place. Great Work Sir.

Fascinating case. It's hard to know what to make of True - pathological liar? conman? delusional? paranoid? Some very strange wiring. I bet the psychiatrists at Broadmoor had a ball psycho-analysing him! Thanks for a great upload!

I replied to this vid two days ago and strangely my post disappeared also. I wondered if True had a posthumous hand in it. Of all the people chronicled by MJM in this series, True stands out as oddly content, happy with his lot, and easily adaptable. Even the glassless monocle seemed to spring from a sunny disposition. True was the insane court jester, class clown, and village idiot all rolled up into one. And his impish grin gave him a certain ironic comic persona, like life's all fun and games, until it isn't, but nobody informed True otherwise. He couldn't decipher between right and wrong, so maybe thought there was no wrong. Like the child whose reality is distorted and nobody gets hurt because in cartoons they don't get hurt.

I am so pleased to find your channel. I, like some others have already commented, enjoy the fact that there is no accompanying music that can often be distractive. You have a perfectly melodious voice suited to your presentations. I am so impressed with the proofs of information by pictures and drawings, and even other comments that allow the information you provide help prove the narrative and help support your interpretation. Well done, and thank you for sharing it this way. May I ask if you are the same Mark Maguire who has drawn the really expressive pictures that accompanied the story you did of the Regicide of King George V? The material was arranged very well, along with proofs of story-lines, from actual photos and the actions and/or inactions around their lives. I hope you have many more to acquaint ourselves with. Thank you so much! 🙂
