The Mafia exists because they are tolerated for various reasons. But mistaking tolerance for weakness is a potentially fatal error of judgment because the state can flip the switch in an eyeblink and squash these people like bugs. When they come they come in force - not with fat, wheezing comic-book heavies but special forces death squads toting enough firepower to repel the D-Day landings, drones, breaching charges, armoured personnel carriers, dogs, gas etc. etc.. As they say in the US - "Mess with the Feds and you are DEAD".

@barung1 Yes. A lot of this came out in the wake of the P2/Gladio revelations and the admissions of Licio Geli. BTW, if you are Italian - out of interest, a quick question: What is the popular opinion on who was ultimately responsible for the death of Aldo Mora?

‘The deaths of Investigating Magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino’ - I remember this like it was yesterday; I was young at the time of their deaths, but I lived very nearby, due to my Father’s work, with a big multinational company (American, I *think* - but best not name it). I was too young to be interested in reading the papers or watching the news (although I am totally bilingual in Italian). But even as a kid, I remember this happening, and at school, in the playground, even among young kids, almost nothing else was talked about. I especially remember ‘going home time’ (school hours in Italy tend to be about 8.30am - midday-ish). Outside school, all groups of parents, huddled together, talking animatedly but kinda ‘whispering’ at the same time - about nothing else. The rumours, the theories, the conspiracies.... who did it? Which ‘clan’? Which family? Was it the state? They knew too much? Were they about to ‘name names’??? They were either like superheroes in suits, or the scum of the earth - depending on who’s view you took, which side of the fence you were on. The reaction was similar do the death of Princess Diana; except for two things: the shock and outpouring did not spread across the world; it was confined to the beautiful island of Sicily; and, unlike Lady Diana Spencer, where people discussed - and grieved - openly and endlessly for the loss, here it was all carried out in far more more ‘hushed tones’, lest you say the wrong things, or about the wrong people, or politicians. Given the manner in which they both died, I say this wit NO pun intended: discussing the subject was like treading in a minefield.
