Yeah...Jameer's freshman year was also awesome. I believe he won National Freshman of the year that year in 2000-2001. That was the year Marvin O'Connor LIT UP #1 Seed Stanford for 37, and I believe didn't miss a two pointer the whole game. I remember before the game, they asked Casey Jacobsen, who was Stanford's best player, and I think the Pac-10 player of the year that year what he knew about Marvin and he said "I've never heard of him...." Then, after giving him a 37 piece, he was like "Yeah, that dude's tough". I always found that funny. It was a bummer that St. Joe's had a huge letdown in 2002, missing the tournament and I think losing to Eastern Washington in the first game of the year, but they bounced back in 2003 and in a big way in 2004.

I'm a 1968 St. Joe's grad and a Hawks fan since I was 10 years old. The Hawks have been a force in college basketball since the 1940s but gained national prominence in the 50s and 60s under the great Dr. Jack Ramsay. The Hawks went to the Final 4 in 1961 and both the 1964-65 and 1965-66 teams were nationally ranked in the Top 5 final polls. The 2003-2004 team was truly amazing even though they fell one shot short of making it to the Final 4. In my opinion only UConn that year had a better team!

My grandfather went to St Joes in the late 40's and was a hawks fan his whole life. I have watched them since i was a kid and i honestly thought they were the best team that year. Such a special group. Carroll was automatic baseline three's and Tyrone Barley was solid off the bench. Nelson outplayed Chris Paul (although Paul was a freshman and Nelson was a senior) in the ncaa tourney. John Lucas iii had been missing three's most of the game and of course hits a line drive three to win the game. Jameer Nelson had Barley wide open on the wing on the final play but decided to take the shot himself and was way short, never been so heartbroken over a loss in my life.

Coming from NYC i never heard of St. Joe's until i went to Nova. Small schools did not have anywhere near the coverage they get today, so for them to achieve the #1 ranking at the time was like a dream. Big props to all the Philly Big 5 schools.

So good, this team was supremely fun: Jamal and Delonte were an NBA calibre backcourt. They had some other solid pieces too.

I'm a huge Big 5 basketball fan....I remember that St. Joe's team really well, and I still see that John Lucas III shot in my nightmares. It's interesting as that Ok. State team had Three NBA players on it, and the lottery pick it had - Joey Graham ended up having the smallest impact. Interesting about St. Joe's that year...Phil Martelli would always start his two post players, Dwayne Jones and John Bryant...But, he would always finish games with four perimeter players - Jameer Nelson, Pat Carroll, Delonte West and Tyrone Barley, with Dwayne Jones, playing a four out, one in style that almost no one was doing back then. Now, it's customary for teams to play that way, but for Phil to have to foresight to basically say "These are my best five guys, that's how I'm gonna roll" was very insightful and ahead of his time.

I think he meant in terms of all time awards achieved in college basketball. Not just championships and ncaa tournament appearances

@@Chris-bf7ro Even if that's what he means, it's still a ludicrously wrong statement...Lew Alcindor, Bill Walton, Christian Laettner, Michael Jordan, Grant Hill, Phil Ford, Shane Battier, Juan Dixon, Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin, all achieved as much or more than Jameer did. And I'm a big big five fan, but that statement is way off.

I wanted St. Joe's to get to the Final Four and win the national championship, but the ESPN guys were right, you can't lose right away in the Atlantic 10 Tournament and be a 1 seed. That team had too much of an average frontcourt to deal with a team like UConn and Okafor.

St. Joe lost in the A-10 tournament to Xavier, which was an extremely good time. Xavier made it to the Elite 8/Regional final where they lost to Duke 66-63. A-10 was the only league with 2 teams in the Elite 8 that year. Kentucky and Stanford were also 1 seeds who lost before making the Final 4. St. Joe was a legitimate 1 seed, but Connecticut would have been a challenge.
