As someone new to model railroading, I thought the tour and presentation was really well done. It was interesting, informative, and clearly articulated about what people can expect to find in this hobby. Really very good.

Great presentation, makes me proud to be a NMRA member. The video coincides nicely with Charlie's article in this month's NMRA magazine.

I believe the ore dock was built by Irv Schulz as well as the circular roundhouse in the last display case. His St. Clair Northern was a beautifully crafted layout and I remember poring over the pages of MR and RMC whenever his work was featured. Looks like a phenomenal exhibit.

Very nice tour! It's been almost 10 years since I last visited the museum. Thank you for allowing people a chance to view it, those of us who don't live near by.

This would’ve been great for a Huell Howser and Lou episode. I remember in the 80’s when the museum had a passenger car simulator where you walked through the car and it was moving around and had the sounds of it going down the track. To top it off the windows had a video effect of lights and shadows simulating what you’d see during the night. I wonder how they got that passenger car and where it went.

Smuggler's Cove is a great diorama. Spend time looking at the details and realism. Well done the Aussie's who built it and the Aussies who got it to Sacramento.

It is my strong belief that model railroaders started out as a real train enthusiast, probably because that is how I started. Imagine being 4 years old and seeing you very first train. Now, imagine it was a coal drag with 3 NYC Niagara's leading, two more mid train and another pushing on the rear. That was my introduction to trains. All the engineers waived and blew their whistle and the caboose crew waived too. I love trains, I love model trains, and love the wonderful models built all around the world. Due to finances and living space I can't build my own, so what, I still love it all. I hope you do too, ;-)

Yes, but his work and life was so incredible, he inspired his own modeling masterpieces rebirth through the talents of a Museum Exhibit Specialist who will now repay John for his FUN working life after being inspired by John Allen since he was very young. facebook.com/Great-Divide-Lines-423511918192732/

What a Great advertisement for a world wide Hobby that I for one have enjoyed for close enough to 35 years. Another Crazy Aussie but not as talented as the 2 Gentlemen who created the most excellent Smuggler's Cove diorama. To build that level of realism in just a Year is exceptional.

I lived in Twain Harte Ca only about 7 miles from the West side lumber mill. It is owned buy The Black Oak Casino. down the road about 17 miles is Jamestown an old mining town. There is the 1897 railroad museum. That is were many movies and TV shows were filmed Like Petticoat junction. I donated a 100+ year old stem flat belt drill press.

Gotta be honest as someone who doesn't plan to make it out to California during the next decade, that this exhibit is planned to be there for a ten year period. This awesome display seems perfect instead, as a traveling exhibit, spending perhaps a year at each location across the country. Regardless, installing it at the National Museum of Transportation as it's final home should be the ultimate goal. Just a humble suggestion. :)

I'm a model railroader. I'm stuck with old DC trains as these new DCC trains are far out of my budget. When I lived in Brookpark Ohio, we had two mainlines that came through to Berea that were the New York Central railroad. When my family moved to Cleveland west side, we were close to the New York Central Water Level Route mainline. Then became the Penn Central.

This was great but why no mention at all of Malcom Furlow but did show his name and picture on his book.Tony Koester was not mentioned either and he donated the whole CTC scene(except the John Allen game on the wall) At the end of the tour the credits dont show any of their names.Why?
@progressiverockvocal3 жыл бұрын
Malcolm's work is right next to Irv Schulz and you can see it in the video. And If you've ever tired to make a video like this it is impossible to ever remember or have time to mention each persons contributions. You could just read names off a list for 20 minutes and not anything else if you wanted to hit them all.. Pint is also that these names and write ups are there at the museum anyone who goes to see it will see Malcolm's and Tony's name there.
@troyb17333 жыл бұрын
@@progressiverockvocal I saw malcolms work,I stopped the video at the end and I didnt see the names I mentioned or I wouldnt of even said anything.Now so you can understand this,lets say I've never seen a video ever on modelrailroading and I watch this and I see this guys model(diorama) and no one mentions his name how am I going to study,google buy his book,anything.Next if I live in a box down by the river and I cant afford to get to this museum how am I going to read the wall for this guys name,not to mention why should I have to travel to california to find out this info.My whole point is since you make these videos that IF YOUR GOING TO SHOW A PERSONS ART,TALENT,ECT THROW THEY'RE NAME OUT THERE FOR IDOTS LIKE ME WHO DONT KNOW THIS GOLDEN INFORMATION.The whole point of the NMRA is to get youth and new people in the hobby, how are you with info like that?If some people have to put that kind of effort into finding out who Malcolm Furlow is they might turn to pottery.
@progressiverockvocal3 жыл бұрын
@@troyb1733 Wow, Hey... I just tried to help. You seem way to angry for me to even try and understand what the problem is anymore. I was not trying to be "Right" I just thought it was worth mentioning; Charlie did a great job of making a rather quick, normal attention span, video. If it helps, Malcolm is an acquaintance, we speak but have not yet met. A nice guy. He is pleased to see his work on display there and impressed with the whole thing. We're all good.

Was there a reason Malcolm Furlow, creator of the San Juan Central, wasn’t mentioned by name or did I miss it ?
@desdichado-0073 жыл бұрын
Forces in the publication business of model railroading right now don't want you thinking like Malcolm Furlow. The Tony Koester crowd wants to make sure that only joyless, autistic parodies of the hobby are portrayed as if they were the hobby itself. Furlow is, of course, the poster-boy that they want to scapegoat for this and beat the drum that he was some kind of model railroading deviant, but I've heard the same snide remarks increasingly applied to John Olson, and even George Sellios and John Allen himself when they think that they can get away with it. It's no wonder, really, that the hobby is drying up. If it weren't for people on KZbin like Jason Jenson Trains and others who remind us what makes model railroading so attractive to most people who might be interested in the hobby (and it isn't discussions on rail height, ballast size, or trying to showcase operations on some track nailed to 6" wide plywood, with maybe a bit of flock glued down to pretend like it's been scenicked).

Not as interesting as I thought it would be. Not many or much real running to see. Roads like you find in Greeley Colorado are much more interesting to visit.

disappointing. Many of the locos appear 1800's. Few if any operating trains. Mostly dioramas or static demos. An operating Gorre and Daphetid would have been interesting.
