The Ed McBean paperbacks are pretty cool indeed! I'm from the Netherlands and have several of those at home - which I picked up because of their stylish covers. I generally love all vintage sci fi and detective mystery paperbacks, especially from PAN (Agatha Christie). Enjoyed your presentation very much.

It was interesting to watch. I was amused by him talking about keeping yourself under control. I remember when writer Harlan Ellison told me I just can't have everything. I have every paperback of his published everywhere on Earth, except the one published in Greece (JEFFTY IS FIVE). Then there is Philip K.Dick, Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard. I put together collecting every book in all the various editions of theirs published in America (a few foreign editions too). I collect more of course and belong to many of the clubs on Facebook like its VINTAGE PAPERBACKS AND PULPS. I've been collecting for more than 45 years and have pretty much every thing I want (over 500 paperbacks). I still scan ebay, Abebooks and various other book dealers. I've begun selling books and basically assisting collectors in finding their heart's desire.

Maybe you can have it all? Sometimes, patience is the key and a load of dedication. All great authors there. The Facebook groups are a great resource.

I learned early on not to have too big of an ambition when i collect books in general. Due to the economics as well as political history in my country i can not expect to easily find Penguin books or older English novels from before the 1940s. Thats why i make it my joy whenever I find an older Penguin (from the 60s and before). Lovely video as always !

I went to an estate sale once and some guy was in the basement hoarding up all the vintage sci fi. A woman came downstairs and said there was lots of erotica (her term) on the third floor. I bought hundreds of stiffeners for less than 100 bucks

While I have every American edition of the books by P.K. Dick, I have some U.K. titles, but refrained from most of the British editions because of the random sci-fi cover art the publishers slapped onto his books. He detested that and so do I.

Have noticed an increasing aggression in the vintage section lately. The other day a fellow was pushing a shopping cart at other collectors with his left hand while grabbing the books with his right hand. And at another vintage store a guy scooped an entire shelf of vintage mysteries while looking as if he was ready to scrum. The hunt is getting quite competitive.

Wow, maybe they spotted something rare. I doubt the average store would have time to look up the value of every book that comes their way...but. I feel these are highly undervalued compared to comics or toys or other pop memorabilia from the period. I hope I'm not hyping the market with my videos😉

@@JulesBurt I think it is quite likely that these videos have created a cult of ravenous paperback collectors--however I do have a couple of aces up my sleeve--one such place is a 18th century church where you follow concrete steps to a subterranean basement and to a door guarded by a couple of octogenarian women, once inside you're free to browse through many vintage paperbacks.

I had a friend growing and his older brother had the entire line of Casca books, as well as Perry Rhodan, Nick Carter, and many more. I wonder where they are now....

Thanks Jules! picked up my first bundle of vintage sci fi paperbacks at $3 each today from local secondhand book shop and now researching the titles and authors (from no knowledge) and turns out I have a first edition,. Love the cover artwork of the sci fi as I come from a graphic design back ground and the cover artwork was a real art form. Most of them are from the 70s. Great channel - new sub today

I discovered your channel today through an Instagram post about vintage Penguin books someone posted and I subscribed pretty much straight away! :) Really interesting video, gives me something to think about regarding my own book collection. I can see myself collecting more vintage Terry Pratchett to add to my already fairly big collection, as I just love his Discworld series! But you're right, the possibilities are endless :) I would, however, need to move into the TARDIS to be able to house everything I'd like to collect! ;)

Thank you much.Good advice for both the new and the advance collector . My first attempt at collecting were the ' The Tom Swift ' books. I was a young Young then lol. Later i tried to go after fave authors...Asmov , Clarke , JB , PKD..Then there was fantasy...Bradbury..and others. Good advice on knowing how much in a series...Its easy for the rabbit hole to become a black hole..as we try to get every thing. Lol. Any how.." nuff said " Thanks. Hello Jules! Wonderful video as always! Would you mind clarifying how many King Penguin books there are in total, and how many Pelican books there are? Also, what was the idea behind Pelican? Are they pre or post Penguin? Feel free to simply point me to a link of a video of you already discussing that. I looked for it, and while I found the excellent King Penguin ones, I couldn’t find any on Pelican. Thank you, as always!

Hi Gustavo, yes, you've found the two King Penguin videos, they published 76 in all. The Pelicans started in 1937, published by Penguin and kept running through to today in some form. Of the vintage Pelicans, I have about 570 of the first 600 and will film a video on them very soon👍🙂
