It’s not hardness-toughness balance that’s really the issue, it’s balancing edge retention and toughness. AEB-L is twice as tough as Magnacut at 61 HRC, but has 60% of the edge retention. If you just want a stainless steel that’s tough at higher hardness, AEB-L is tougher and has better edge retention than 52100 at 61HRC; Magnacut trades that extra toughness for a lot more edge retention.

Twice as tough? I doubt that very seriously. While AEB-L holds the advantage in that department, CPM Magnacut is as strong as 4V, nearly the toughness of CPM 3V. As for edge retention, corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening and grindability, Magnacut wins as well. On top of that Magnacut has better potential for higher hardness.
@brianjohnson3743
@brianjohnson3743 26 күн бұрын
@@bluegrasssurvival9423you should go look at Larrin’s toughness charts. Max toughness for Magnacut is approximately 17.5 ft-lbs at 60.5-61 HRC. At 60.5 HRC, AEB-L is around 40 ft-lbs and 3V is around 35 ft-lbs. i1.wp.com/knifesteelnerds.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/magnacut-stainless-toughness.jpg?w=755&ssl=1

Good to see more magnacut, and thanks for showing actual numbers (would be good to hear actual numbers for your knives in 52100).

Yes'rrr I have a magnacut test blade done by Aaron Johnson at 62-63hrc and it is ground paper thin yet is able to be torqued hard intentionally abused into African ironwood and it doesn't get a single snag or bend no chipping nothing!!! I'm having a blast with this knife and steel, and for the rumors that it doesn't get a super sticky sharp edge are absolutely false lol I'm an edge snob and I'm able to get this knife screeeaming sharp where it push cuts into flesh doing the Murry Carter 3 finger test and it's polished smooth slicing phonebook paper damn near silently! Also whittled a single hair 3 times before it broke and can top hairs off my arm without the blade touching any skin sooo yeah... I guess it's either the maker, the sharpener or both because I was able to do it and quite easily too using venev stones

I only chase the ghost that is the edge and MagnaCut can offer asuperb edge, like almost any "good" steel. I've noticed that it suits me well since I can get it really, really sharp compared to something like S110V (only user error, of course)

@@ramonade_knives I like my 4v and cruwear M4 and S90V for that Uber fine edge apex that tops hairs without ever touching your skin anybody can whittle a hair lol but I've sllplit a single hair or shaved it up to 5 times before it snapped off but it takes a very light touch to get that edge and to do that task... Funny how so many people are saying you cannot get a sticky edge on magnacut lol I don't know where they're buying their knives from or who made them but mine sure as hell can take a wicked edge! My spyderco mule in mag, my AJK in mag, my two bark rivers in mag they all take a wicked sticky edge not surprisingly the mule takes the best edge and I've yet to be able to dull or damage the apex I believe I got one kf the first run that were up to 64hrc

Ball bearing steel is by far, thebest steel I've ever used and the only steel I would choose, for any fixed blade. Either it's a hunting knife, bushcraft/woodworking knife or camping, ball bearing is the best you can have. It's the only steel, that sharpens as fast as common low allow "carbon steels" however if heat treated properly, it's edge lasts as long as supersteels and even more than some super PM steels!!! It takes a razor edge and it's carbides cut almost as good as PM steels. So you have a super tough steel (similar to 3V steel toughness) but with exeptional edge retention (way more than 3V steel holds) that it's edge also does not take damage as most steels do! It's the only steel with only 1 downside, which is stain resistance, however, it won't rust as fast as common steels like 1095 will do!!! You won't find any other steel, come close to perfection, as ball bearing steel does! It's manifucturing, is also of high quality standards.

What steel are you talking about? “Ball bearing steel” is pretty broad…
@greekveteran2715
@greekveteran2715 2 жыл бұрын
@@shadeshiest22 You're right, it varies from bearing to bearing and from maker to maker. That being said, Ed Fowler , Busse knives and a lot of makers I personaly know, all admit, that it's the best steel choice, at least for small/medium size, belt knife, hunting/bushcraft/General use/Hard use, you name it. That's also, the only steel that almost made me a steel snob,though I still care for the rest attributes on a knife more, than I do about steel.

Busse uses 52100 but call it Sr 101. It's a great steel but it doesn't have either the toughness or wear resistance of 3V(unless you get a first run of benchmade at 57hrc) nor the stain resistance of 3V. 52100 is a pretty simple carbon steel, about 1% carbon, about 1.5% chromium to achieve higher hardness and refine grain structure and other trace elements. 3V is a PM steel with 7.5% Cr, about 3% vanadium, 1.3% Moly, a bit of tungsten and other trace elements. Don't know what 3V you've tried that was less tough and had worse wear resistance than 52100 but there had to be something wrong with it. Other ball bearing steels are bg42(stainless and rarely used now even after Carpenter made a PM version B75p, shame since its pretty nice), lc200n/Z-finit/n360/cronidur 30 which is used by a few knife companies. Then there's SM 100/NiTiNol 60 but its an alloy of nickel and titanium, not a steel. 440C was a bearing steel too.
