Okay, just follow me on this one. Here we see Sam do something very questionable in the attempt to do good. He wants to spontaneously gift his girlfriend evening theatre tickets. However, she’s a single mother with a very young son. But he jumps into plans before knowing that she can make it, and if she couldn’t, this would create a ‘me or the son' conflict Sam would have to lose; rejection has been the constant in his life and I don't know if he can accept winning. But even weirder, it’s The Pillowman - the kind of play you only suggest if you know the other person’s mileage. If memory serves, the ARG says that the Magnus Institute gave the kids a Milgram test, and that Sam had a very high score: high obedience. Dr. Milgram's first trials were in prestigious academic settings, and had participants deceived into expecting regular learning tests until an authority figure would command them to give electric shocks (secretly fake) to a peer (secret researcher) who would cry, beg, and complain about a heart condition before going quiet as if they had died. Sam’s high score indicates dangerous levels of obedience. It was traumatic for the adults, so imagine the lasting effect on children. Expect Sam to do something deeply, deeply troubling with good intentions at some point in the series.
@CheziahKatt6 ай бұрын

@maximusthedude83056 ай бұрын
On a note unrelated to the story, the Milgram test sounds severely fucked up. I mean, what is that even supposed to measure anyway? Seems like something you devise specifically to create trauma, not a scientific study
@rubyreeds89316 ай бұрын
@@maximusthedude8305 Oh, I can answer this! While the version in Magnus is using children as the test subjects, the original Milgram experiment in 1961 was determining how obedient people will be when an authority figure instructs them to do something morally wrong. In this experiment, willfully giving someone up to a 450-volt shock for not being able to remember and recite the words said to them. It was a double-blind experiment advertised as a test about memory. Of course, the shock was fake, there was always an actor on the receiving end who had to make it real that they were actually being tortured. Even if the actor tells the subject that they have a heart condition, the subject was strictly instructed up to four times by the experimenter that the experiment must continue. ... the fact that Sam was one of the most obedient subjects they 've had _scares_ me more than any of the monsters. Given that it was conducted by the Magnus Institute, a hotspot for compulsion, I don't doubt they were weeding out children who could become easy toys for the Eye being most susceptible to compulsion and least resistant to it. I even theorize that this episode was the first time we witnessed Sam's own subtle compulsion.

That sounds pretty cool tbh. Personally, I do think the fears have blurred somewhat in TMP as the majority of statements are really hard to pin down to just one power. I do wonder though, if the fears seem merged, but only because they’ve actually been split into much smaller segments, many of which make up a lot of the overlapping space between the 15 powers. However, if this is true then I’m not sure it’s entirely a natural thing. This is big claim, but my theory at the moment is that the OIAR and it’s weird and specific filing system which supposedly serves no purpose, is actually supposed to be dividing the fears via classification. We know fears in TMA were shaped by humans’ comprehension of them, but if in TMP they are purposefully being defined and boxed into such small categories then none of them will ever be able to emerge as a full power - which would naturally lead to all the faction-based conflicts and rituals that we saw in TMA. A little bit like what Smirk failed to do when he built the panopticon to “balance” the fears against each other. At least, that’s what I think the OIAR is trying to do. But I don’t know how well it’s working, and I don’t know why they’d be also working directly with the ‘externals’ if they were supposed aligned against the fears.

Another banger of an episode!!!! 😃 1. Sam and Celia are cute. I appreciate that they’re still in the awkward beginning stages of a relationship, just feeling things out to see if they’re a good fit, without it being this instant, deep, meaningful connection that a lot of media likes to portray. ☺️ 2. I love how supportive big sister Alice is of her brother! It’s sweet. ❤️ 3. LADY M!!!! She has arrived, and she is terrifying and _glorious!!!!_ Like Gertrude, if she weren’t into toppling other Avatars’ plans, but just became consumed by the Hunt itself. (Also, it’s nice to have a straightforward Hunt case. 😊) 4. Lady Mowbray can tell that Celia is _different!!!_ And Celia knows how to face up to an Avatar, to show no fear! Either she’s a badass, or she ended up like Georgie, with her fear cauterized. My guess is that she’s already seen so much horror, during the Eyepocalypse, that any singular Avatar just isn’t enough to scare her properly, anymore. 5. It’s great to finally hear Luke’s voice, rather than just hearing Alice’s side of the conversation over the phone! 😊 6. Oof! That ending!!! First, the _Tape Recorder,_ seemingly compelling a statement of some kind; seems buried related? (Drowning on land, and all that?) Then there’s Alice, trying to save this poor person who’s dying from supernatural horrors! Poor girl is traumatized now (if she wasn’t already). 😢 The victim’s statement reminded me somewhat of MAG 195: Adrift, but more focused on the drowning aspect, rather than the sheer vastness of the ocean and sky around them.

I wonder if this incident will have an effect on Alice’s skepticism in the future. Maybe she’ll have a harder time not taking this all seriously now. I try to grasp the air and fill my lungs that burn and rattle full. I can’t. There’s so much air, but none inside as I go down. Again, the cold surrounds and drags me down, the blue, the black, the weight of all the sodden fates awaiting me below the line of sea and sky... I kick, I lunge, I flail, towards the brightened blue and break the third and final time. I know I’m spent. There is no more within me save the salt-spun death that reaches down my throat and spasms in my chest, that cannot breathe. Inside me coughs and sputters and tries to push it out but more comes in and down I go the third and final time. I know it’s done. I’m done. The water is... is... dark. Deeper... Deeper... Down among the dead and swollen flesh so pale within this lightless place where eyes are open cloudy white. And all the water pushes down upon a lifeless form that sinks and sinks down to the bottom that is not there. No sandy grave below the swell, no rest among the coral and the depths I feared so much. But reached up and over land. To claim me still.

I’m done. The water is… is… dark Deeper… Deeper… Down among the dead and swollen flesh so pale within this lightless place where - eyes are open cloudy white. (louder)And all the water pushes down upon a lifeless form that sinks and sinks down to the bottom……that is not there. No sandy grave below the swell no rest among the coral and the depths I feared… so much. But reached up and over land. To claim me still. Catchy.

On a previous episode I said I thought Alice would die first… I’m really hoping that’s not the case, especially after we just saw her with her brother. We’ll see how it goes though

I wonder if that woman at the end just became a new avatar. The way she seems to expire, I can't help but remember when Oliver Banks let the ship sink to become an avatar of the end, or how Jon fully became an avatar after The Unknowing and almost expiring himself. It's as if she herself made a decision to fully become one and came back as a result... But an avatar of what is sooooo vague because of blended everything is... And I'm hyperfixated on this being the second tape recorded moment...

To me she is a victim of the thing that was locked in the ruins of the institute. Like when Jon forced people to relate their traumatic experiences, but in a more intense way.

WELL SHIT! That was an intense episode. Never let it be said that The Hunt is subtle. So it seems like we can add Lady Mowbray to our lists of "Externals" and future enemies alongside Mr Bonzo. The statement itself doesn't have much to dissect, very clearly a club of rich arseholes who also happen to be Hunters lead by this Lady Mowbray. Based on what Lady Mowbray says, it seems like she can tell Celia has past experience with the supernatural (calling her "fine" and "strong") and can probably tell something's up with her (calls her "different). I have a feeling she's making her own plans that involve Celia based on her reply to Celia asking if she can help her: "I rather think you might". Notice she didn't say "Yes you can help" she seems to think Celia WILL help her as if she doesn't have a choice. Celia also seems to know she's a Hunter based on how she responds to Lady Mowbray's goodbye ("Catch you next time dearie" "No you won't"). She knows Mowbray's a Hunter and means "catch" in a very literal sense. Now, there's a lot to unpack from that ending. Let's start with what the Victim (as they're called in the transcript) was talking about. Clearly revolves around the ocean and seems to be a combination of The Buried and The Vast, what with the emphasis on drowning (Buried) but also on the constant feeling of sinking ever deeper without reaching the seafloor (Vast). What sticks out to me is how they're speaking: it sounds less like a classic statement and more like the ones from the post Change world. Those statements weren't formatted as someone recounting a horrible event that already happened and more like a person describing the event as it's happening and how its making them feel in the moment. Plus the way the Victim seems to be in a trance reminds me of how the people trapped in Domains would be completely unaware of anyone not a part of that Domain. Now to unpack the big reveal: the fucking tape recorder. Clearly a connection to The Web (back to scheming and plotting already) and the Archives. Not sure why they're carrying a tape recorder but Alice clearly knows more about them, the supernatural and the Institute than she's telling Sam since the tape recorder makes her freak out and realise something about the Victim before running off. I wonder if there's another Eye avatar using the recorders to feed on Fear, maybe the OIAR has their Externals use the recorders so that way Eye avatars can leech off their fear (The Eye has been called a parasite that feeds on second hand terror before).

I’ve had a theory. I think they serve the Extinction. Extinction is extreme change, not just mass death. Perhaps changing the status quo, eliminating the other powers and feeding off of their destruction, allowing humanity to develop new fears in their place? It seems those unable to be afraid are immune/resist the powers, which could be described as subverting humanity in a way- fear is natural, after all. I think the forums he’s been filling out are to join that initiative.
@crazebear6 ай бұрын
My guess is they may be training an AI to eliminate entities by feeding it information and knowledge that the eye cannot feed on, hence the digital voices. Them sending out known entities like the clown would also be useful knowledge to eliminate them later. I mean, if the database isn’t feeding the eye, maybe it’s feeding something that can LEARN from it.

So they manage the monsters and send them after people and we’ve seen names of the fears mentioned as well as the Magnus institute I wonder if this is the world post Magnus archives or the world the fears were sent to
@TheNitpickChick6 ай бұрын
It’s definitely not the original universe from TMA, post-Change. There are too many inconsistencies for that to be the case, even if everyone somehow forgot all the horrors they witnessed. (The Magnus Institute being in Manchester, rather than London, for example. Or Gerry and Gertrude being alive and well here.) It’s almost certainly an alternate universe, where the Fears (as well as Jon, Martin, and Jonah it seems), were sent to at the end of TMA.

Slaughter and Hunt? Hunt definitely, but it feels pretty close to slaughter in certain ways like how quickly he turned on his friends and brutalized them - but not sure, just an idea since it has seemed that the entities have merged at least partly with other statements. I wonder if it's going to be that the entities have been knotted up and that over time they will unravel
