The Mahasuvi language, also called Mahasu Pahari in English, is spoken by a million people in the Himachal Pradesh state of northern India.

The speaking population is about 1,000,000 (2001). It is more commonly spoken in the Himachal Pradesh, Shimla (Simla), and Solan districts. It is to be known that Shimla and Solan were parts of the old Mahasu district. Himachal Pradesh State on 1 September, 1972 reorganized the districts dissolving the Mahasu district. The Solan district was carved out of Solan and Arki tehsils of the then Mahasu district and tehsils of Kandaghat and Nalagarh of the then Shimla District of Punjab.

You might be able to understand some of it since he used many Hindi-Urdu words but in its pure form, even other Himachalis would find it hard to understand it all. In fact, some lects of Shimla and Kullu also have adopted Tibetan words since they border Lahaul & Spiti and Kinnaur where Indo-Tibetan languages are spoken although very few and vice versa too- Lahaul & Spiti and Kinnaur have adopted quite a few words from Kullui and Shimla lects.

@@Zun_00 Some Farsi loanwords are used in upper (and lower) Himachali Pahari languages. And none of the native Pahari dialects of Shimla or Kullu have adopted any Tibetan words. It is the other way around. Kinnauri and Lahuli dialects have adopted multitude of Indo-Aryan words.

@@username41981 There are very few Persian words in our Pahadi lects compared to other languages as our languages and culture has remained untouched from any external influence. Yes, some of Kullu and Shimla lects do have some Bodish etc. loanwords but there aren't many. Just like that, the Indo-Tibetan languages of Kinnaur and Lahaul & Spiti too have taken words from some of the Kullui and Shimla lects.

Jammu's Dogra belt doesn't really have similarities with upper Himachal. Upper Himachali Pahadi is completely different from Dogri. The Dogra belt of Jammu are only really similar to parts of lower Himachal like Kangra, Una and some parts of Hamirpur culturally and linguistically. The people of Churah Valley in Chamba have similarities with Bhaderwahis and the people of Pangi in Chamba are related to Kishtawaris.

@xyz Did you even read what I said? Jammu and Himachal don't have one language but multiple different languages and this guy was clearly talking about Dogri in his comment. They can have the same root but it doesn't mean all those languages are similar. Upper Himachali Pahadi lects are not similar to Dogri at all- go listen to Chidiye, Mole Re Molaye, Chadkuli or any Tharah Kardu songs and tell me if you understand even a single word. That was what I was trying to say. Also, majority of Himachalis aren't Dogras and Himachal is definitely not similar to Pathankot or any other region of Punjab so why mention it? I bet you would have barely understood whatever was spoken in this video either. Yes they are all Western Pahadi languages but there is no need to exaggerate the similarities. Just because they come under one language family doesn't mean they can be understood by each other.

@@Zun_00 who the fuck told you Pathankot was punjab it was part of Kangra even during british time it was earlier Capital of Nurpur ruled by Pathania pahadi Rajas but After division of British made Punjab The pro punjabists like Sikhs claimed that if Pathankot like una are given tu Himachal then they would left no Hill station In Future thats why Centre Remained it to be part of Punjab. If we draw a Straight Linguistics Border from Kangra to Jammu as of dogra even then it would came under the Western pahadi Group The only thing is that in Present time half of the people there are Migrants from Sialkot while native pahari Dogra rajputs move to sialkot after 1947 and Even Then many Hindu Rajput clans there are pahadi but Many of them have adopted and have adjusted with Punjabi Identity.

@@Zun_00 as a Himachali and Speaker of Bhattiyati Dialect of Chamba which is Intermediate of Kangri,Dogri,Churahi and Gaddi. I can understand Dogri,Gaddi,Chambeali as well as,Mandeali,Kahluri Shimla Dialects are also Understandable but only in lower extant Because of their High Grammatical differences and not of Voccabulary because Majority of Western pahadi have nearly similar Voccabulary. Churahi,Pangwadi have 80% similar structure because a Churahi can understand Pangwadi very well just like a Chambeali or dogri person can understand mandeali,Kangri and Kahluri

Hearing this, I think Hindi speakers would be able to pick out a few words as a lot of Hindi words have been used, although they won't understand any full phrases. Great video. Yes the current generation has started to mix Hindi-Urdu in their Pahadi lects but Pahadi in its pure form would not really use any Hindi or Urdu words as they are all older than both Hindi and Urdu. Hopefully all Pahadi lects of Himachal and Uttarakhand get officially recognised so they can be preserved.

@@Zun_00 ​ @Unknown Its quite hard to get it officialy recognized as there multiple of them from diff communities and tribes . It's the same for all hilly regions fr eg NE has like 140 - 200 different languages if u consider tribal languages but the kids in todays gen just know English and the main language may it be meitei , nagamese , manipuri and other such languages . But yeah enough research and recordings can be done to preserve them . As people go from lower class to mid and upper mid they usually forget their original local langugae , untill it's not used in their home as mother tongue . Nowadays parents generally use the common languge or hindi as mother toungue so its quite hard to preserve these languages . Me myself dont really know how to fluently speak my original language as hindi was taugt to me 1st although i can understand it very well but my fluency is not like the people who live in my village or who use it as mother tongue . So gen gap and modernization with getting promoted to higher class is a big thing which basically act as a fuel in making these langugaes disappear . U can't balme the parents too , as if u want to get to high sataus u have to adopt to the socient and u should know the main languages spoken in your states and used for work . The local langugaes basically have no use these days , these days knowing foreign langugages has much more importance than knowing any local language , it also increase ur salary to a good certain amount

Lower Himachalis can still understand each other as their lects have lots of similarities so they can pick a standard lect to teach the lower Himachali districts. I am using the term "lects" as it's debated if the Pahadi lects of Himachal are all different languages or dialects of the same language however one thing is for sure, that is that they form a continuum. I disagree on the part that that learning regional languages is useless. Himachal is one of the states which has no external influence from all the invasions our country has faced and we take a lot of pride in that. If we can't even save our languages then soon we'll let go of the culture too. Our ancestors didn't preserve our languages and culture for us to just replace it some day. We do speak Hindi as a secondary language as it's taught in schools and it is helpful around India however it's not good to see one's own language as useless. Also, it's unfair for the Indo-Tibetan tribes to be told to forget their native languages and just learn Hindi. Why can't they teach us our native tongues and Hindi at the same time? Most Indians speak more than 1-2 languages but they start to forget their mother tongues and only learn Hindi then this will just be boring.

@@Zun_00 Well i agree , we can teach next gen our regional language and there is nothing wrong in that but i still stick to the point that learning and getting "each" tribal language recognised is basically of no use there days. We can surely preserve them in video form or by noting and saving the script used and common words spoken by talking to the locals etc. And well as u said that most indians know 2 languages 3 ( inculding english ) . yes its right but apart from hindi and english the 3rd language should be the one which is widely spoken across a particural large area so people use it to communicate . What's the use of a language which you can only use to communicate with your family . So i was talking with a perspective of NE indian region . If you go to other states they have a particualr language which they speak in that whole state and communicate in that their is nothing wrong in learning that but if you go to nagaland each tribe has diff language , so basically their is literally no use of learning a language spoken by only 2000-3000 people . as i said in my comment that - if u want to get to high status u have to adopt to the society and u should know the main languages spoken in your states and used for work . I didn't deny that learning the common language ( usually 2-4 with diff dialects) used in state is wrong . I just was speaking through a perspective of NE indian as i lived their for several years and know that people their dont really know their language as they have to move to big citites for higher education and settle there . But as generation keep on increasing the local langugae just diminishes as u dont really have anyone to talk to in that language I am sorry i didnt focus on word lect , but if those are different language i am pretty sure its really hard to get it officially recognised .If they are dialects and just 2-4 languages then you can say about giving a recognition. This language is clearly less Paishachi (Punjabi like) compared to other Western pahari languages of Himachal. And I can clearly observe some shared Garhwali (neighbouring Central Pahari language) vocabulary creeping in, words like "Danda/डांडा" (mountains), "hyun/ह्यूं" (snow), "gaad/गाढ़" (water stream),"Dokhra/डोखरा" (irrigable plot), "Gaad/गाड़" (to fetch). But the language itself is still very different from Central pahari. It's only from the east of Yamuna valley where full fledged Garhwali comes into being.

We have similar words in western in Pahari, like Mandyali. Hyun= snow Garh= collect Some words like Look= hide Dhakh= a little Kho= at/of Ra= of Bathi= at (place) Etc are the same across western Pahari, and maybe even garhwali I think.

You're utterly clueless about Pahari languages of Himachal. Mahasui and all other Pahari lects of Himachal are part of Western Pahari group and Nepali is part of Eastern Pahari group. Both groups are separated by Central Pahari group of languages spoken in Uttarakhand (Garhwali-Kumaoni). Mahasui doesn't even have a strong resemblance to Garhwali (nearest Central Pahari lect) and you're comparing it with much farther Nepali. There exist sharp variations among the Pahari dialects of middle Himalayas, so much that even neighboring dialects can sound very much different. Mahasui is much more closer to Hindi and Punjabi than it is to Nepali, lol. The only Indian Pahari lect with any significant similarity with Nepali is Kumaoni spoken in Kumaon region of Uttarakhand that borders far western part of Nepal.

As someone who has lived in Himachal almost my whole life, I definitely hear elements of Nepali in this language, you have deep rooted issues to be offended over someones opinion. Whether nepali is eastern Pahari or central or whatever, it still falls under the Pahari branch of languages, so Mahasuvi, Garhwali, and Nepali would probably collectively have more in common with one another than Hindi and Punjabi... On the contrary, to me this sounds absolutely nothing like Punjabi or Hindi in my opinion. As for why I brought up Tibetan, it sounds like Kinnauri, makes sense since they live in close geographical proximity with the speakers of the Mahasuvi language

I'm just astonished by the sheer level of overconfidence with which you are making wildly ignorant and half-baked claims here. You might have lived almost your whole life in Himachal but you're still an outsider to Shimla hills and possibly entire Himachal with a poor knowledge of its native cultures (no offense). Conversely, I am a native Pahari of upper Shimla hills. My hometown is less than 100 km from Rohru, the main town of the region the "Rohruri" dialect featured in this video is native to. And my own native dialect is extremely similar to this dialect in every respect, yet has many differences. I can clearly observe affinities of both my native dialect and Rohru dialect with vernacular Hindi and Punjabi and even with Garhwali but close to none with Nepali which I get to hear quite often as there are thousands of Nepali migrant labourers in our region (I know the difference between Indo-Aryan Nepali and Sino-Tibetan Nepal Bhasa). This is quite logical as Mahasuvi speaking region is much nearer to Hindi and Punjabi speaking regions than Nepali speaking region. And "Pahari" is just a generic and vague term for Northern Indo-Aryan languages spoken across Mid-Himalayas and Shivaliks from Jammu hills to Sikkim. By your logic, even Dogri Pahari of Jammu and Kangra is closer to Nepali spoken 1000-1500 km away than Punjabi spoken 100 km away. I can engage in a more detailed and logical discussion with you on this if you wish.
