An amazing house, thank goodness the French government took the initiative to preserve and restore it, and making it accessible to the public.

When I look at houses like these, I love the architecture and always wish I lived in a place like that: but for me I always see changes in them that would make them so much better. For example In chateau I would build the entire first floor higher the rest way higher taller windows and more wider. I feel that the entrance should always be grander. But I love these rare beautiful chateaus.

Hi Ken, I'm taking a moment at the beginning of your video to say that I'm appreciative of your going international in scope. I'm a huge fan of your format, ie discussing the life of the individual who accrued enough wealth to build these stunning works of art, and then observing the lovely details that make these oases in the desert of the normal mass produced buildings we see around us every day. Looking forward to (fingers crossed) some forays into the more ancient structures of history in Europe and further! Keep up the great work

I'm so glad you enjoy these videos! While I tend to focus mostly on American homes, there's a handful of older, European homes that I've been slowly gathering information and photos of. Stay tuned, Cheers!

Of all the beautiful homes you have visited this one is my favourite for its wealth of intricate details, setting, and rich history. It's wonderful to know it can be visited, seen, and is preserved by the French people.

If not mistaken, the Chinese even took photos of it to build a mock replica in their country, because they LOVE shooting pre-wedding photos with this kind of setting, hahaaa

@@Polemodrome If so, seeing photos of the Chinese prop version would be interesting. Is it just an exterior shell?
@Polemodrome
@Polemodrome 2 ай бұрын
@@2615ParkAvenueAssociates Nope, not an empty shell. apparently it is a luxury hotel, which also holds a seminar center, a spa and a wine museum. I quote: ---- "The building - called the Zhang Laffitte - cost $50 million and now contains a hotel as well as a seminar center. Mr Zhang said: 'It cost me $50 million but that's because we made so many improvements compared with the original. 'I wanted to show how Beijing was rushing out to meet the world. We have the Forbidden City. We have courtyard homes. I wanted something universal." ---- 😂 Zhang "improved" our masterpiece. But heh, even if it's an arguably better baroque pastiche, it's still his baby, he can be proud of it.

Exquisite details in every room. The gilding above the windows in the King's Chamber got my attention., but the entire interior is spectacular. The craftmanship is out of this world, and I have to wonder if such talent is still around. The château's symmetry satisfies my fondness for balance. Thank you, Ken.

What a magnificent building! I`m so glad to see that at least some countries cherish their past and architecture, unlike the US where we can`t wait to destroy it and replace it with a parking lot or glass and steel box. Good find, Ken.

Wonderful to see a place that didn't fall into too much disrepair. I don't know anything about restoring such a place, but think the outside could use some pressure washing, if it won't harm things. It would look totally different and reveal its original beauty.

Is the name not actually Chateau de Maisons-Lafitte? We almost took a tour of it a few years ago while in Paris, but this was unfortunately cancelled. I believe it's named after the banker Lafitte, whom you mention in the video and who performed some restoration and developed the surrounding housing estates (hence, in English the "houses-Lafitte" nomenclature). Lovely video, Ken.
@Polemodrome

Both naming conventions are correct "Château de Maisons" is a diminutive, because saying the entire name all the time can be redundant.

Hey Ken, you didn't talk about the most important thing. What makes this castle special, is that from outside you can see 3 or 4 floors. But inside it has about 10 floors.

If you are interested in knowing other notorious buildings from my hometown, you can still make research around the Tour Malakoff (sadly now gone) a second empire style mansion with gothic accents which was rumored to be haunted. It belonged to a celebrity. Also, the count of Clermont-Tonnerre used to have a reception room and theater on his domain, which are now demolished.

Yes, Maisons-Laffitte also has a wooded residential park area, whose layout is also strictly protected under laws. In fact, the park itself used to be part of the Chateau's domain. Mostly horse owners and rich expats live there, plus some upper middle class people on the projects. But you can still circulate around for sightseeing as the mansions there are superb. If you like camping, there is even a camping ground located in the town's island, too. If you can, come sometimes.

@ThisHouse I beg to differ. X in French is pronounced like "eex," not "eks." Thank you for your clarification, though. That makes sense of it now. Addendum: Not wishing to belabor the point, but if you are using the correct French, you would have also pronounced his name "sharl," not CHarles. Sharl deese. I'm actually a fan of This House, not a grammar Nazi.
