Thank you for not just pulling a pimp-my-ride and doing the bare minimum to make it roll out of the shop without sounding like lugnuts thrown into the tires before mounting. It is always awkward to judge to what extent to work on and when to stop, but given that you needed to separate the engine and transmission anyway, spending a little bit of time to do some additional engine cleanup and other service that is not easily done in-vehicle makes sense if you have the time to do it. Hopefully the new owner will appreciate the attention to detail.

Loctite is highly important, because something like 85% of any threaded fastener is empty space. This empty space can allow the bolt to back out, also it allows corrosion to form and seize the bolt. Loctite has a specific breakaway torque, unlike corrosion.
@philipmcmurtry46293 жыл бұрын
I’ve had several cars with oil leaking out through the flywheel bolts because there was no loctite on them. Cars like the TT the crank is drilled completely through so oil comes into contact with the tip of the bolt when it is installed.

And get the compressor rebuild. They don't have compressor shops or rebuilders over where you are at? Check or test the clutch, and turn the pully wheel and see if it has suction... before you go ordering a new one. I do a basic ohms test and also apply direct 12v current to see if it magnetize for the compressor clutch.

flywheel bolts on vw and audi are one time use strech bolts and really needs to be torqued to factory specs. I don't understand why so many mechanics just hit them with the air gun to save 5 minutes on a clutch job. Also they are fine pitch threads and must be started by hand.

I've never had an issue with helicoils. They're a common fix for spark plug threads, and cylinder pressures can exceed 1000 psi just after the plug fires. I'm pretty sure the flywheel isn't coming off anytime soon. Also, whom ever wins this car, I hope agrees to let you drive it and enjoy it after the giveaway is over. I will, if I win. 🤞

I know those bolts that thread onto the crankshaft go all the way into the engine . The helicoil can leak oil through the helicoil . Being a European car technician myself for over 20 years I would have used a Time Sert on those . But to each his own . When I’ve repaired stripped spark plug thread holes time serts are the best thing I’ve used . But to each their own.
