I worked for DPW (Directorate of PublicWorks) at Fort Benning for well over 30+ years (now retired). This tower was by far my most favorite construction project I have ever been involved with all those years at Benning!

I better get top comment because Joseph Willie is my brother and I know for a fact, because of the cameras, he had to hold back a lot or they wouldn't have filmed him.

Lol man I was so scared at the top of that tower. One of the drill sergeants asked me if I was scared of heights and I replied with "yes drill Sergeant!" After saying that, I made a terrible mistake and accidently bumbed the other drill sergeant with my foot. After he grabbed me from my collar and pushed most of my body off the tower (left just enought to where I was barely hanging from the tower) he replied with a loud "I'll help you get down faster you piece of shit!!" lol good times

for everyone who is worried about this, DONT!!!. im extremely terrified of heights and this was one of my favorite parts of basic. when u get up there, look down at the ground, get the butterflies in your stomach, climb out on the wall and when they say get off my wall, walk like 4 steps down away from the ledge then kick out away from the wall as hard as possible and repel down. im tellin u, its a wonderful thrill and like i said, im extremely afraid of heights.

For me, and my height issues which include a bit of wooziness, getting around it was easy enough. Simply don’t focus on the height or risk factor, but rather focus on the task, step by step, reach by reach. If you’re doing that, by the time you’re up and over, you’ll notice that you won’t remember much fear. After that, it gets much easier the 2nd and 3rd and 4th time.

My battalion was right across the road from the tower. Our Drill Sergeants threw a dummy private off the top of the tower and genius next to me in the bleachers shrieked and thought it was a real private. Later that day, my platoon's DS smoked us while he was on top of the tower. Good times...minus the fact that our company was the only one that rarely ever used the DFAC. Morale was always low because of that.

@clickclocks I mean that this exercise isn't possible to take the fear of heights. It's harder to climb a ladder w/o any security system than be on a climbing system and to known, that you cannot fall if you fail.
@MGallo12 жыл бұрын
this stuff isnt that hard. i zipline in the woods and repel off trees. its actually really fun. it prepares me for basic.
@doorsillbear13 жыл бұрын
The rope makes the difference. If I know I couldn't fall, there is only a little feeling of fear. But w/o any rope or railing I would panic.
