The problem was it was cancelled in its prime, so it never could recapture the "spark" that the original seasons had. The expectations were too high, and they messed around with the formula too much. Any time there's such a long gap in between seasons (we're talking 5+ years), things are going to change. The biggest problem for me was actually the filming style. They went from the "documentary" feel to a fixed camera, and it just takes the spontaneity out of it.
@ItWasAShtShow

I would agree. Outside of the time constraints that made 1-3 so good, I think director Troy Miller is the main reason the new seasons fail. He's style doesn't fit and he clearly doesn't know what good comedy is.

If Jason Bateman was the spine of the series, Jessica Walters was the absolute heart. In the first four seasons, she had such an amazing, complex performance that could only be rivaled by Will Arnett and David Cross' characters.

@@James-do4oh Hurwitz himself admitted S4 was full of mistakes and I'll say the re-edit made it an even bigger mess. Without the network constraints the pacing was thrown off entirely and there was far, far, far too much reliance on callbacks to much funnier material in the original 3 seasons. I say this as someone who was very excited for the Netflix revival when it first aired and was going in with more than an open mind. It is easy to go back and see how the "look" and "feel" are all off but there was still potential. Combination of production nightmares with scheduling conflict and - quite frankly - Hurwitz's arrogance that he felt compelled to "Reinvent" television again sunk it. Those green screen scenes alone are just ridiculous

I was super excited for part 2 so this was awesome. And you touched on it a little but I think the biggest issue with the reboot was losing Michael as the sympathetic straight man. Almost all great comedies get you to care for the characters on some level and that was lost in season 4.

For me the main problem with S4 was the lack of the characters being together. Just that group dynamic with the silly situations, the banter, the obscure little things you don't pick up until a second or third watch. Having the characters mostly alone or with one member of their family in S4 really lost that element and for me that was probably the best thing about the whole show.

The biggest issue I had with 4 was the mean-spirited nature of the humor. Arrested development was a show about horrible people, but the humor in the cruelty made it worth it. I felt 4 had more cruelty than humor. The most egregious moment of it for me: The MST3K cameo. Joel and the boys making one rather unfunny riff. A shame. Speaking of which, I wonder if MST3K could be a topic for this channel.

Mine as well - it's an interesting idea to have George Michael go dark due to the abuse and neglect he received, but Jason Bateman's genuine delivery is both his strength and weakness. He can portray genuine kindheartedness, but equally convincing cruelty without the comic element of George Senior or JOB.

She was pretty clear about saying "it wasn't okay, but I forgive you." It sounds like Tambor was fairly contrite as well. It wasn't her "standing up to him", it was her standing her ground, wanting to be heard, but also willing to forgive him. Gen Z isn't awesome at forgiveness, so it might not look like that to younger people, but that's what that was 😂

I've been watching Dropout shows recently, and I'm constantly struck by how the cast are effectively coworkers absolutely *roasting* each other - often with sexual overtones - for our amusement. Now, they may be totally aware of each other's boundaries, and I did notice that the cast will always say things like "do I have your consent" before touching each other...but surely sometimes it goes too far and someone is hurt in some way. In that situation, you have to be ready to assume the best about your coworkers and be prepared to forgive mistakes, as well as apologize for your own. In an industry where people are supposed to punch, kiss, grope, insult, demean, or fuck their coworkers on camera, you can't be delicate about mistakes. Did Tambor make a mistake or was he just genuinely a terrible person?

Really helpful videos, especially this second part, in understanding AD’s demise. As a long time fan it’s good to know all the background as to how it was stopped in the first place, and the messiness that doomed the reboot. I think Netflix giving Hurwitz free reign on format and length was detrimental, because as he said, constraints increase creativity. Part of me also feels like it was too late to revive it, especially with the child actors all grown up. The first 3 seasons are still so watchable tho.

Thank you for this, I never really felt like watching Season 5 due to the original release of Season 4 letting me down personally. I still love and watch the original 3 seasons, still hopelessly in love with everything about them. I've always asked myself what was the biggest thing that Season 4 omitted that killed it for me, and then one day it hit me. What helped the first three seasons along was the tie-in to the Bluth company. It helped on so many levels, especially with Michael doing his best to save it as well as the great comedic moments that happened at the business. Season 4 just quickly skipped over it and then focused solely on the characters and their branching storylines.

I was a late arrival to AD when it was on Fox. Saw a Season 3 episode and spent a NFL playoff weekend shuttling back and forth to Blockbuster to catch up 6 episodes at a time (on a 1 DVD at a time plan). And I was neck and neck in my Fantasy Football League (which in our case, included playoffs). But this SHOW! It was relatively terrible in the Netflix era. But nonetheless, was glad they at least tried to revive it - the axing had been so abrupt and the reboot still had some humor. But like Ali vs. Larry Holmes, a shell of what it once was. Four of the saddest words I ever heard were Ron Howard’s Fox-era-ending narration, “It was Arrested Development”. I respect that boldness of not doing the same format of the previous 3 seasons, and revolutionized and adapted to the new medium of streaming, considering most return sequels, reboots and remakes after a long time don't even pretend to try anything interesting with the new format or revisit. Not only it was weirdly prophetical in some parts, but it also showed that since you can't fully remake or recapture the same "magic" or "spark" of the original, it's better to try new things while referencing the old ones.

Never saw the show when it originally came out and just spend the last couple of weeks binge watching all 5 seasons. I’m really glad I watched this video because it explains all of the questions I had when watching seasons 4-5. I know there’s been a decline in quality of a show when I start feeling like I’m forcing myself to watch it and I’m not enjoying it.

I really hated the Netflix reboot because it was too damn confusing. Major headache. I'm not there to piece together all of the jigsaw puzzles and enjoy the voila moments. The original is simple, direct and one can watch it episode after episode. Straightforward.

I remember when season 4 was coming out and being so excited for it. As I got through the first handful of episodes I was trying so hard to love it but barely following what was going on. It had its moments, but definitely didn’t have the charm or precision of the original run. All of the awful behind the scenes stuff was just the icing on the crap cake. I don’t even remember if I ever gave season 5 a chance 😂 I kind of just view the original three seasons as the entire series at this point!

I actually really enjoyed Season 4. Could've done with a better director, but the way they managed to make it happen despite scheduling and how the episodes fit into the larger puzzle was pretty awesome. It's still a very strong season in my mind imo.

Thanks for putting this together. What’s neat is that I came across this show while in college…I checked it out from the local library. Became an immediate hit and my friend, now husband, watch it to this day. Of course we own the box set. To me this show is a hidden gem that I never watched while on air because the name was the same as a music group I listened to.

For the record, season 4 is my favourite of the series and one of my favourite seasons of TV ever. While it certainly is different from seasons 1-3 and not for everyone I think the humour and the construction of the story is so unbelievably brilliant that every time I watch it I'm stunned and impressed. That Hurwitz and co. were able to pull off season 4 at all under these conditions is a triumph, but it also includes many of what I think are the funniest jokes, best character arcs and most memorable scenes of the entire series. Interestingly enough, after watching season 4 for the first time (the original edit) I didn't think it was as good as what I had come to expect, but when I revisited it later upon the release of Fateful Consequences I realised how much of the season I actually remembered fondly or was looking forward to seeing again. Perhaps it took the re-edit to bring out the best in the season, but I think it's genius in any case and I can forgive the intense amount of exposition when it's matched with an even greater quantity of hilarious jokes. I also personally really like the darker tone they gave Michael in his arc; despite Michael's competence and high moral character in relation to the other Bluths, the first 3 seasons hinted at serious flaws in his character as well and it's interesting to see them kind of bubble to the surface and have a serious, long lasting impact over his story. I think it makes his character more interesting as a result. Unfortunately, Season 5 still leaves me cold; I'm not surprised to discover the making of it was so unpleasant because unfortunately I think that miserable atmosphere translates into the show. Especially due to the smaller number of jokes, season 5 ends up feeling depressing and uncomfortable in a way that the show had avoided up until that point purely by being so ridiculously funny. Perhaps some people like it more for its more dramatic tone but I think overall it's pretty underwhelming and not nearly as memorable as the show up until that point. The best episodes of the season are the ones in the middle (especially the last four of part 1) which pick up the pace somewhat, but I think the lukewarm reception season 4 got may have caused the showrunners to back away from that more maximalist, convoluted style and thusly create a story that doesn't live up to its full potential. (In my opinion)

When I first watched AD I thought it was some kind of comedy gold. Then I realized the callbacks were just rote memorization... "Hey I know that!" seems to release an endorphin or two the first few callbacks - but then it just becomes trite. I realized in the end that AD was just rehashed Happy Days and similar ilk...easily digestible pablum. What I once thought was clever is simply obtuse, what I thought was thoughtful was simply mean spirited. The true heart of the show came out in the end - rage fueled and directionless.

Sit down Shut Up was hysterical. Way too out there for television but like Bromwell High there is just something about teachers so open for parody even though, well, not really. But I really wish we had more of those. Or at least a flashback to Miracle's job interview.

The ending wasn't actually that sinister, as the body that they found was not actually lucile 2s, but the one maebe used to "kill off" anette. they allude to it by saying "this is the happiest corpse i've ever seen" as it had the teeth that she used which made her permanently smile (stan sitwell references that she smiles in her sleep). also she had found stan's weird note at one point which apparently was alluding to him being a killer. buster might have been admitting to putting the body in for gob's trick, not the actual murder.

That interview near the end where David Cross is talking about the show coming back, the pause he has after being asked "Do you think it should?" is incredibly telling. What happened with AD honestly helped me come to terms that it's alright we never got a season two of Firefly.
