The making of Brown Sugar in BukitTinggi Indonesia

This traditional Ladang Tebu (Sugarcane Plantation) is located in BukitTinggi, Indonesia.
The harvested sugarcane juice is squeezed by using traditional contraption where a buffalo is tied to a wooden plank that is mechanically connected to two big-wheel grinders. The buffalo is blindfolded to prevent it from being distracted by the on-lookers and its surrounding. The baffalo is guided by a man to move in circle to the length of wooden plank. He has to insert the sugarcanes into the grinders repeatedly to squeeze the juice.
The extracted sugarcane juice is filtered into a big drum buried under the grinding wheels. The drum is possibly connected to an underground pipe to channel the sugarcane juice for processing into brown sugar.
In the adjacent atap shades, the sugarcane juice is later boiled in a big frying pan to make it tick and changed into hardened brown sugar when it is cooled. The brown sugar is later cut into smaller pieces and sold in a family-owned shop. The shop also sells varieties of kampung-folk-made products such as flour-coated peanuts, belinjai crackers etc. In addition, the shop also serves refreshments, especially, the freshly made sugarcane drinks to its customers.
The site is turned into a stop-over destination for tourists. There are also other shops which enjoyed spill-over business by selling clothings for prayers and gifts at reasonably cheap prices.
