I think when we see the swords glowing with their element, it means the special attack is charged. Then after you use it, it goes to non-glowing, more basic look. You can see the void sword after he uses the rift attack, and the sword isn’t glowing with purple energy anymore.

Maybe, for example it does more damage than the staffs/bows to compensate not always having that special attack available.
