In this video, you’ll hear the oldest recorded receipt of making Kyphi, an Egyptian medical papyrus of herbal knowledge dating to circa 1550 BC.𓏤
It Among the oldest and most important medical papyri of ancient Egypt, but it is believed to have been copied from earlier texts. The Ebers Papyrus is a 110-page scroll, which is about 20 meters long.𓏤
The papyrus is written in hieratic, the third stage of ancient Egyptian language. The papyrus paper is real, but the text was printed. I fabricated the scroll container for safe transport.𓏤

The Kyphi breath mints made from the site probably tasted bitter because 3 of the ingredients are technically unknown and s/he chose to use only mastic gum... though we can assume what the 3 ingredients were: 1. mastic gum 2. melon (possibly cucumber). Something interesting here with this ingredient is that the instructions mention “finely pulverizing” the ingredients which can not be done to the pine kernels nor the cucumber unless you’re dealing with “dried/dehydrated cucumber chips”. The only other ingredient I can assume that would have substituted cucumber in the later kyphi recipes would be raisins which are technically dried grapes themselves. In this case the pine kernels and cucumber, in their original moist forms may be necessary to bind the dry ingredients?!?! 3. and Hyacinth Petals (and I’m pretty sure that they occasionally substituted hyacinth petals with some other flower/plant, in later translations “pqr” is used in lieu of “ynktn/ynktwn”). This ingredient alone may tell us that maybe Kyphi originated as a foreign fusion recipe adopted by the Egyptians because this ingredient is most definitely foreign and later substituted with a more stable natively grown ingredient. Two of the questionable ingredients are known to be infamous in Greece even to to this day and the 3rd ingredient Mastic Gum is undoubtedly only grown in Greece and interestingly enough is known to be chewed “like bubble gum”.
