The fact that a tunnel literally goes through the continental divide is so badass. This tunnel is higher than every state high point east of it and is narrowly higher than Oregon’s highest point, Mount Hood. My very first KZbin video featured Loveland Pass which is the bypass of this tunnel and then I also have videos on my channel featuring the drive through both tunnels. Big props to Colorado DOT for the construction of this engineering marvel. There is a scenic viewpoint along I-70 eastbound just before the town of Silverthorne that has information plaques that go over the history of these tunnels and provide some great pictures on how these tunnels were constructed! Highly recommend checking those out if you haven’t already!

I went through the Eisenhower Tunnel when I moved to Utah from Florida, it's an experience I will never forget. I-70 in Colorado is probably the most beautiful stretch of interstate in the country.

During the winter months US-6 has been closed due to snow. When that happens trucks hauling Hazardous Materials (Haz-Mat) are directed thru the tunnel. The Interstate is temporarily closed for 5 minutes each hour to allow Haz-Mat trucks to travel through the tunnel. This is also done in a couple of other places.

The important thing to remember about the Eisenhower tunnel is to never ever schedule your trip to return Eastbound through the tunnel on a Sunday evening (Monday if a three day holiday). Everybody to the West has to travel through the tunnel to get back to Denver, and that is a ton of traffic. It becomes a miles long stop and go jam all the way up to the tunnel. Just before the entrance they separate the traffic into 4 lanes and use stoplights to interleave two vehicles at a time. For safety, CDOT runs the tunnel so it never backs up and you never have to stop while passing through. Once you are through the tunnel the traffic isn't bad because the tunnel throttles it back, but it will be hours getting up to the tunnel entrance.

I used to go thru the Eisenhower fairly often as a long haul trucker. One time I was loaded fairly lightly and decided to bypass the tunnel and take US 6 Loveland Pass instead. That was an adventure for sure. I remember being above the tree line at the historic signs and looking down on I-70. It was gorgeous. I did it on dry ground and I wouldn't want to try it in winter. That little flimsy guardrail wouldn't stop me from sliding over the edge and some spots are straight down. I walked up to the historical markers at the top via a trail. On the way back down I started feeling light headed and weak. I thought damn, I must be coming down with something. Then when I got back to the truck I realized that it was the altitude at 12,000 feet. Very pretty up there.

Do a follow up on the Moffat Tunnel. It is the railroad tunnel that goes under the continental divide just north of the Eisenhower tunnel. The Moffat Tunnel opened in 1928 and is 6.2 miles long!

I'm in Vegas and I have seen people complaining that someone had opened every bag of chips on the shelf. I explained that it was the truck driver's fault because he drove over 70 rather than going the long way around. Even mentioning the elevation and air pressure with sealed bags, I'm not sure they understood.

In 1972, my family was moving from New York to Arizona via Colorado. In August, the tunnel was under construction. We were riding in a 1971 Pontiac Granville pulling a 27-foot mobile home. We of course had to go through Loveland Pass. Traffic was screwed up. You had to drive US 6 as if you were in England. I was looking out my driver-side rear window looking down at treetops. There were NO guardrails. Halfway up, our car stalled. After about half an hour blocking traffic, a CAT came down to us and towed us to the inside of a hairpin curve. Dad kept trying to start the car but no joy. About 45 minutes later, it started. We discovered the car's carburation and timing was set at sea-level in NY. After a few stops and starts, we managed to get to Rifle, CO and had the car retimed and retuned. What a scary day for three young boys! I have been through the tunnel six times and over Loveland Pass twice since then.

I've been through the Eisenhower Tunnel once and it was a fun experience. But I was surprised to realize that Hanging Lake Tunnel farther West has a maintenance garage and regional monitoring facility in the middle of the road tunnels. Who knows what other secrets are in the I70 tunnels.

The Hidden Lake tunnel was built with an s-curve to hide I-70 in the side of the cliff to make a quiet zone for the rest area ... The park is along the old US 6.

I was in Antarctica in 1990 launching weather balloons getting ready for the attack on the gulf war. It was very cold there -30 to -70. Had to launch every 6 hours and report the data.

I've skied at Loveland Ski Area which has some runs that go over the tunnel. Yes, the traffic can be a nightmare. Also, Vail Pass was another feat. The highway bridges were built by one of the best bridge designers in the world. They have a bike path along the whole way from Vail to Copper Mountain. If you are into mountain drives, non better than I 70 from Denver to Grand Junction. It will leave you breathless from time to time.

I once skied at Loveland pass. One thing I didn't care for was CDOT has an unbelievably massive horn they blow to stop trucks that aren't permitted to enter the tunnel (tankers and such). So periodically you would be skiing and a very loud horn blast would come echoing up the valley. Loveland is the only ski area that has that "feature."

@@mintberrycrunch1752 since Switzerland opened the 10½-mile long Gotthard Road Tunnel in 1980, the construction of high-altitude road tunnels like the Eisenhower Tunnel are no longer necessary. In fact, had the stretch of I-70 leading up to the tunnel was built today, the Eisenhower Tunnel would be taller (due to the use of tunnel boring machines) and the portals would be alot lower (no higher than 7,500 ft. above sea level), at the same time, there would be four tubes (like the Ft. McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore) instead of two, with the "outer" tubes being reserved for mixed passenger and commercial vehicle use.

@@mintberrycrunch1752 To add a few facts. In 1853 construction of the Hauenstein summit tunnel in Switzerland started. It was "at an altitude of o"nly" at 600 m (~2000 ft) and "only" 2495 m (~1.55 mi) but it was in 1853 it was opened in 1858. In 1916, when train got longer and heavier and had problems climbing the steap rail line they opened the new 8km (~5mi) Hauenstein base tunnel that bypassed the line (and the summit tunnel). in 1871 construction of the Gotthard Tunnel (not to be confused with the new 57km/35mi Gotthard Base Tunnel that was opened in 2016) started. It was a 15 km (~9.3 mi) tunnel with an altitude of 1,106 m (3,629 ft). It was opened in 1882. As for today, there are quite a few tunnels with a higher altitude than the Eisenhower Tunnel. The highest on is the Mi La Mountain Tunnel in China. The tunnel is 5.72 km (3.56 mi) and the altitude is 4.752 m (15,590 ft). This does not mean that the Eisenhower Tunnel is not impressive for that time but don't be in a hurry to declare something from the US as "the.....in the world"

The Eisenhower Tunnel is a very cool piece of engineering in a beautiful location! I've only driven it once (both directions) but it was quite an experience. Being from the East Coast, I travel tunnels often, but this was a very unique one. And even though I'm from the East, I've had much experience with mountain driving, as I vacation in the Western US pretty much every summer. But this stretch of I-70 is one challenging stretch! I can't even imagine driving it in the snow!

Another engineering marvel to mention is the Seikan railway tunnel in Japan connecting Honshu and Hokkaido. Decades of construction and numerous obstacles and dangers. Passenger and freight rail can now access between two islands. Shinkansen was able to expand needing to allow wide gauge tracks and within a speed limit and to compete against airline travel.

I went through that tunnel twice in 2007 within a months time. Once when I drove my old POS 1998 Saturn SL2 through there on my relocation journey from Detroit To Las Vegas, then again a few weeks later with a moving truck to complete the journey.

I went on a motorcycle ride along the continental divide a few years ago and stayed in Georgetown, a stone's throw away from Silverthorne. Lovely little town. We rode over the Loveland and Hoosier passes and stayed in Buckskin Joe. The town of Fairplay is along that route, and is the inspiration for the TV show South Park.

I think that this tunnel has influenced many other mountain tunnels for interstates that have solved many issues. I have never been through this one but on the Cleveland to Florida interstate of i77, there are 2 mountain tunnels about a mile long. One for the West Virginia Virginia border and the other leaving and entering Jefferson national forest. These were huge as the areas around these tunnels were surrounded by high mountains so it was the easiest way through

When I was a kid in the late 60s, my dad and I used to drive up switchbacks to a convenient overlook and watch the construction of the Big Walker Mountain Tunnel, eagerly awaiting the distant thump of the explosions. It opened in 1972 but we moved so I never actually drove through it until 2004.

I recently got really interested in this tunnel, and I find the elevation at which it is impressive. Here in Europe the highways do not exceed 1400 mt/4600 feet altitude (the highest is north of Madrid, Spain) and the alpine tunnels (or in Italy) barely reach 1000 mt/3280 feet, but they are longer (like the Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland which measures 17km/10 miles!) and sometimes with only two lanes and a single tube. I would love to drive along I-70 in Utah and Colorado and many other roads/interstates in the US one day… I find it very interesting to compare the American and European road systems, and this channel was a great discovery!

@@luigiparisi5841 in some ways it is and in some ways not. in the randstad area there are alot of highways with alot of lanes like the A12 between Utrecht and Amsterdam, or the A16 in Dordrecht and ofcourse the A1 near Muiden between Amsterdam and Almere which at some narrower points has 12 lanes and basicaly all Ringroads or semi-Ringroads (like the Randweg in Eindhoven) also have alot of lanes. but outside of those, most highways are just 4 lanes. One thing that is quite special is just the density of highways as the Netherlands has alot of highways. there are 38 highways in this tiny nation. and we do really have massive interchanges. everytime when I visit family in Rotterdam I drive trough Knooppunt Ridderkerk and I am still amazed on how massive it is everytime i drive trough there. But I think Belgium has the "most American" highway system in europe becouse the road quality over there is close to that of the USA 😂

I remember as a kid (my family were skiers) going through the Eisenhower tunnel before the Johnson side of the bore was finished and open. One lane in each direction went through the Eisenhower side and there was something interesting because of the large traffic volume and the possibility of collisions and snarling of traffic: There were observation posts (I think 5 of them) where CDOT workers would sit in a little booth on the wall of the tunnel and watch traffic go through. If there was bunching, they could change the speed limit inside the tunnel dynamically via overhead electronic signage. There was even a rescue/service car that would ride on a rail high on one side of the tunnel that could carry a person from side to side even if there was a full width obstruction (like a big crash). As soon as the Johnson tunnel bore was finished, all that was abandoned and taken out.

I live in Denver. In high school me and my friends went on a ski trip. I was one of the people driving. We decided to wait until 4 pm on a Sunday to leave Copper Mountain. Google Maps said the Pass was half an hour faster. So I've driven over Loveland Pass, with ski traffic, as the sun set. It's beautiful, especially in January with snow capped peaks. But also stressful with traffic. But hey, I beat my friends home by half an hour. It only took 4 hours lmao.

I live in northeast PA, and I did not know that. I know that the Sideling Hill, Ray's Hill, and Laurel Mountain tunnels were abandoned decades ago, I have visited the first two several times, even rode my bicycle on the abandoned stretch of Turnpike. It's pretty cool.

Some weird oddities I've found include I-5 north of Santa Clarita, California switching right of ways for a few miles, kinda like a diverging diamond interchange. That is Emigrant Hill. A 2,000 foot vertical hill climb into the Blue Mountains. To keep the road to Interstate standards. A 6% grade makes the road 7 miles long. A beautiful Lookout off the interstate.

Allegheny Tunnel on the PA turnpike is 1.1 miles long and the first bore in 1940 so that distance through a mountain was not unheard of. That tunnel might be a video, it was made double in the 60s and now there are plans to dig a bypass alongside it to let hazardous loads through. The commission says there is a lot of trouble with the tunnel and that is why it will be bypassed.

I read somewhere that the first version of the Interstate system had Denver as the western terminus of I-70. But, the military felt that moving men and equipment from Colorado and points east via I-25, I-40, and I-15 to Southern California was too long. They pushed to extend I-70 to a connection with I-15 in Utah. That was to the displeasure of Colorado and Utah officials, who wanted I-70 to connect Denver and Salt Lake City.

The working name of the tunnel was the Straight Creek tunnel, it wasn't given the President's name until after it was finished. Best advertising slogan: (for Loveland Ski Area on the East side of the tunnel) The tunnel is a big bore -- Ski Loveland!

As an italian the fact that a simple tunnel makes me laugh. In Italy is usual passing in a 3+ kilometers (1,4 Miles circa) but no one consider them a big opera.

There used to be a height restriction for trucks. I've had to take US 6 because of it. I was going Eastbound and white knuckled it all the way down. The next time, I measured the trailer to make sure I wouldn't trip the sensor. 😁😁😁 Any chance you could do a piece of Glenwood Canyon? A lot of I-70 is on bridges thru there.

It's been long enough I can say this without getting in trouble. Trucks with hazardous materials are supposed to take Loveland Pass and stay out of the tunnel. Nobody has ever taken the signs off the trailer to go through.

All I know is that nothing was worse than trying to head east any Sunday afternoon/evening leading up to the tunnel and even on the other side due the sheer amount of ski traffic. I don't know if they ever envisioned the amount of traffic modern Colorado gets when they built those tunnels.

10 years ago my sister and her husband and their kids were coming back one Sunday July afternoon from a weekend at Frisco. Took them seven hours. Traffic was backed up from Floyd Hill all the way back to Frisco. He said never again.

This tunnel is barely 3km long, in Europe the gotthardtunnel is 17km (10mi) long and there are several tunnels through the Alps longer than the Eisenhower tunnel, this tunnel is a baby tunnel compared to many tunnels over the pond

I have no problem with women working any job , if they can handle it, if they can pass the test that the job requires then I’ll support them but I have a friend who retired as a cop after 28 years and I do agree with him that you can change test just so someone can pass it, that can put lives in danger be it a man or a woman, good luck to those who have something in mind that they want to accomplish !! BTW-I gave up being a CDL A driver after 40 years plus because my spine could not take the 4 bulging disk in my back thus ending my career as a tractor trailer driver and I consider myself pretty darn good !! But I always told myself that if I couldn’t do the job safety I would give it up ! It was not easy but I have always put safety first !!

Drove through this tunnel this past MLK weekend for a ski trip. It was definitely icy that evening and took us almost five hours from Denver to reach. Had no idea this stretch of I-70 is considered one of the most treacherous in the nation. I now feel like a pro lol.
