MALAYALAM CINEMA 2022: A YEAR OF EXPLORATION Pre covid, Malayalam cinemas to my knowledge was not that recognized except movie like Drishyam which was widely recognized but still according to me it took nearly a decade more for the Malayalam industry to be recognized although many movies had been viewed through various streaming platforms. It’s the covid & post covid, today Malayalam film industry is looked upon. During RRR promotion, SS Rajamouli appreciated about Drishyam 2, Ram Charan appreciated Minnal Murali so I as a Malayalee person, am very proud of it. As 2022 comes to an end, I just want to take through the journey of the industry in 2022. Malayalam Film Industry started with Super Sharanya movie starring Anaswara Rajan in lead role. A simple story of a girl, we could say what’s unique in it was the story was being told. From start to end there was laughter and left the cinema hall with a pleasant mood. The success journey didn’t stop, it continued with the movies like Meppadiyan (Above - Mentioned). The biggest hit of 2022 was being inaugurated by “Hridayam” (Heart) starring Pranav Mohanlal in lead role. Vineeth Sreenivasan direction gave us the guarantee and those expectations didn’t fail. It was the first movie which crossed 50 crores in the year 2022 that too in a 50% occupancy. A journey of a boy from his college love story to his real love, a feel-good movie with some beautiful songs making the audience a feeling to come back to the big screen to watch as it was difficult to bring the audience back to big screen post covid 19. But there were string of flops giving a fear to the box office as in this tough situation whether they would able to sustain as there were movies which could have been released on OTT but still released on big screen strangling the theatre owners. Aaraattu (Celebration) a highly expected movie of the complete actor Mohanlal where after a long time we could able to see action and fun but miserably failed at the box office thereby raising the fear as even an A list actor couldn’t able to give a hit. But with the Bheeshma Parvam starring Mammootty in lead role, which reunited with the director Amal Neerad after 15 years the fear got immersed. When its trailer got released, I was skeptical of its box office success but post watching, it just gave the goosebumps which was highly required. A movie loosely based of the Hollywood movie “The Godfather “, but with Amal Neerad fantastic shots backed by Sushin Shyam classic BGM the movie was the 2nd movie of 2022 crossing 50 crore mark at the box office. The graph of Malayalam cinema was gradually moving towards upward trend as in the months of April and May 2022, movies like Jana Gana Mana, CBI 5: The Brain, JO & JO were commercial successes at the box office thereby raising the hope that if people are getting justice for the money they paid, there is no pre and post covid, film would be a box office success. Contradict to it, although CBI 5: The Brain came out with negative reviews with its illogical storyline, the hype of the movie was so high as the character Sethuramayar CBI was so popular as similar to Agent Ethan or James Bond, people went to watch what is new in this movie & the result was, it crossed 25 crores at the box office. But still the upward graph was struggling and trembling as movies like “Meri Awaz Suno” “Makal “(Daughter), “Pathaam Valav” (Tenth Turn), Jack N Jill, “Kuttavum Shikshayum” (Crime and Punishment) & few more failed miserably at the box office. So, during the 1st half of 2022, only 6 films saw the light of success & box office was waiting anxiously as what it will be its fate during the 2nd half of 2022 But during this 1st half, films like Bhoothakaalam, Bro Daddy, Salute, 12th Man, Anthakshari, Puzhu (Worm) were accepted by the audience. Be its experimental, thriller, or entertainment it just gave a hope that industry could able to differentiate the movies into OTT or theatrical based on its content & film making style. In 2nd half of 2022, as a phoenix Malayalam industry roared back. With movies like “Kaduva” (Tiger) an action genre movie, Pappan (Daddy) an investigative thriller movie, Thalumalla (Chain of Fights) a pure entertainment, Ena Thaan Case Kodu (Then You File the Case) a social relevant humour film, Palthu Janwar a feel-good film. 5 films, 5 different varieties but result is one, “BOX OFFICE SUCCESS” Also, there were experimental movies, socially relevant, survival thrillers , realistic some of them are “Mahaveeryar”, “Ela Veezha Poonchira”, “Padaveetu” , “Pathonpatham Noottandu”(19th Century) , which performed either fairly or a disaster at the box office but the hunger of exploration didn’t stopped. October 2022 was really a fantastic month as “Rorschach” a psychological revenge drama which was just watched because of Mammootty who always on quench for new content. The core content is revenge but executing a revenge drama through psychological approach, mammootty’s never seen before performance, Nisaam Basheer film making, Midhun Mukundan goosebumps impact BGM, the film crossed 40 crore collection at the box-office. Another one was “Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey” a film based on domestic violence which we saw in “Great Indian Kitchen”, “Thappad”, “Darlings” but jaya jaya jaya jaya hey movie was filled with humour, the film maker was able to convey the social cause which not only entertained by the audience but it was that kind of a film which was beyond the expectations as the movie crossed 40 crores at the box-office. The other hits were “Kooman: The Night Rider”, “Mukundan Unni Associates” registered the Malayalam film industry that its back on track. But still there are certain movies in the name of thriller, realistic, comedy without realizing whether it would be commercially viable or not resulting in the failures which choked up the theatre owners. So, there was a statement from the renowned film makers that before review, people should know what is editing & other technicalities but it should be realized that the same public with their honest reviews had made the movies like “Rorschach”, “Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey”, “Kooman: The Night Rider”, “Mukundan Unni Associates” & many more in this year. When looking forward in 2023, Malayalam film industry will be definitely travelling through on a positive track. Bunch of promising movies some of which are “Barroz” wherein we could not only see Mohanlal as an actor but also as a director, Prithviraj - Blessy dream project “Aadujeevitham”, Mammootty - Jeo baby - Jyotika “Kadhal: The Core”, action king Suresh Gopi interesting & highly expected movies & many more. As a whole, Malayalam industry is churning up, re shaping which not only having box office success but the industry which was considered as small, today its setting as an example for other language film industries to know the process of film making.

Brilliant discussion. And a terrific moderator! Malayalam films continue to impress and amaze with nuanced storytelling and execution. I could watch a “Jaya Jaya…” or “Nna Than Case Kodu”numerous times and still discover something new. Would take these films any day over an “RRR” or “Pushpa” or some other loud tacky film that claim to be the future of Indian filmmaking! Thanks to ss rajamouli India is not being represented as a poor poverty country like in slumdog . Its now the country who fought the british cruelty and earned independence . A proud nation. As an Indian I'm proud that SS rajamouli represented India on an international platform and won oscar. So never look down upon a pushpa or RRR. It takes a lot of effort to do that. Just pure respect for all.

The anchor is totally off here 50:10 movies like JGM & Other great movies won hearts from other states. The concept of Prakrithi was brought up only in Kerala after seeing the success of movies like KGF and Vikram.

Exactly what I thought. My Telugu, tamil, Bengali friends appreciate Malayalam movies so much. Sometimes they suggest me to watch some Malayalam movies.

Exactly. Seen so many comments in in the reviews of kgf and vikram from malayalis that they are fed up of prakrithi padam. The irony is that these films are well appreciated in other states.

This is wrong way of thinking. yes malayalam makes great movies.No doubt.At the same time they have to make big number movies. Which is malayalam lacking. In an industry all kinds of movies has to exist.Just being self content that we have sensible movies is not enuf. See Raja mouli how he is extending his market in west.Everyone thinks its abt oscars.No.He is smartly extending his market to west for his next movie.By Mahabharatham he is slowly making it complete global movie .he is thinking in 5-6 thousand crores market. Its imp we have to increase market.
