However, you need to think about inflation. Yes, $5,000 was worth a lot then and is still pretty nice today for some. But, inflation has made that amount translate to $85,000 today; the inflation makes it more. Also you need to consider what an amount of money will get you as the value for things was different then to now.

Yes..adjusting for inflation is as you alluded to is only part of the story. People in depression era 1940 America were just allot poorer than they are now even adjusted against inflation. $5000 then would still effectively be perceived as allot more money than 85K now would be by most folks.

@@ZeyphodZeyphod, yes, people had to ration food also. Pigging out on tons of junk food is a much more modern thing. Almost everyone back then, even those with a decent amount of money to their name, were unable to buy enough food to where it was possible to pig out the way many people today do. There just weren't the same variety or amounts of food available. Many people were lucky to eat an apple a day. Fresh fruits were a luxury, many people had to thrive on limited canned food and bread, and loved each chance to eat some sweet fruit. And now today, there are tons of fruit available that many people avoid because they'd rather indulge in candy, cake, and other junk food snacks. Times have changed alot
