Id just like to point out that using the word "guardian" is a bit misleading! In Finland a guardian makes sure your finances are in order, like in cases of mental illness, the guardian makes sure you don't spend all your money on unesessary things, but on things like food and rent (usually they even pay rent and utilities automatically) A guardian DOES NOT check on the person, spend time with them etc. Since thats not their job. So maybe the guardian was doing his job like he was used to. Im quite sure they don't have straight access to the bank statements of the person they are caring for.
@SilveryFlame4 ай бұрын
Yup! There is also a "real" guardian position, lets call it caretaker, but at that point you're essentially one step removed from full time facility care - if not in full time facility care already. Or you have willingly appointed a willing relative as one.
@Larzang4 ай бұрын
Correct. There's a difference between a "legal guardian", and a "guardian of interests". AKA "huoltaja" vs. "edunvalvoja". Seems like Vesa had the latter, but not the former.
@bioLarzen4 ай бұрын
Thanks for clearing that up! But... even if the guardian only managed his finances, he must have noticed something... After all, any money the victin got (from the state for example) must have stopped being used by the guy... the guardian had 15 years to notice that... Or if the guardian notices that the money of the person they are guardian of, suddenly goes dead - no money is put on any of his accounts and no money is taken out - for FIFTEEN YEARS - is the guardian not supposed to do something? I mean at least notify the relevant authorities that something has probably happened? Is it normal/usual/as per regulations that the guardian notices that for over a decade the guy does not use any money and nor does he put in any money - and they (the guardian) does nothing, just because the money is not used irresponsibly? I would find it extremely hard to wrap my head around it...
@Ksoism4 ай бұрын
@@bioLarzenthis guardian is probably an official, or actually many. In my understanding social service does this. They probably just monthly post his allowance to his account and pay the bills. If they need more, they will be in contact. At least back then, there probably wasn't a system that red flags if someone hasn't been in contact for some time.

In Finland a "guardian" could mean edunvalvoja. An edunvalvoja is often a relative or if no relative is willing to take this position an assigned lawyer. The task of this guardian is to handle the legal and financial affairs of a mentally unwell person. A guardian of this type rarely meets the person they are assigned to which would explain why the guardian never checked on Vesa.

Without steel is an idiom in Finnish meaning without alcohol as it has no strength. Having cold nerves is a quirk of trying to translate Finnish to English directly so it sounds strange. What really was said in the article was more akin to " Were you nervous?" "No, I wasn't nervous. With nerves of steel I went and ordered a pepsi without alcohol" when correctly translated. Finnish is very different from English so it is bound to happen.

We had a somewhat similar case in Michigan of a woman by the name of Pia Farrenkopf who they think died sometime in 2009 & ended up mummifying in her own garage but nobody noticed it until 2013 or '14 because her bills kept getting autodebited. It's absolute madness to consider how we just sort of shrug and give up on some folks.

I'm wondering if his "guardian" was paid for that position or was supposed to make occasional visits to check on his health and living conditions? Did Vessa have a bank account that the "guardian" had access to? The guardian obviously failed at his responsibilities. And what the heck happened between the brothers? Very sad. I hope Vessa has found peace and happiness wherever he is.
@janariviik26345 ай бұрын
I'd assume that the guardian was purely a financial one. Normally they'd just deposit a standard sum to their checking account from their savings account (to which the client has no access to) on a weekly basis or so. If they have a larger purchase to make, they'd contact the guardian and ask for money for it. Whilst it may seem strange that he hadn't made a request in 15 years (especially having previously travelled extensively), it is really non of the guardian's concern. He would have assumed that Vesa had just settled down to live a quiet life in peace,
@skeptiwolf56544 ай бұрын
Usually guardians are family members. I know a few people who have this service. I assume a social worker of some description would be assigned if no relative was available. I have a "transfer account" (välitystili), which is a lighter version of this. All my money goes through this account. The person in charge of this pays my rent and electricity as the bills go there directly. Also because we have nationalized health care all doctors bills go there too. The rest of the money is sent to me to use as I wish. Any other bills I get I either pay from that money or sent to the person in charge to be paid from next month's money. Anyway, what I am getting at is that if a guardianship is handled in a similar fashion when there is no relative available the situation could be similar. The worker would have many clients, they would be mostly making transfers and unless something went wrong they would have no reason to contact the client if care, other than financial, was not needed. Even though he had previously traveled and contacted the guardian for funds this guardian may not remember him out of all the people he worked with and also the worker could have changed as the original one changed jobs or retired. I mean I am not sure exactly how a non-relative guardianship works but I am speculating based on my experience in the present day system.

When people are very paranoid, they can be extremely hard to be around, even for family members. You can love someone with all you got, but eventually you need to leave to preserve your own mental health and wellbeing, perhaps even your life. It’s bit more than not trusting people because of valid reasons, but thinking everyone is actively out to get you, sometimes in very imaginative ways, nearing magic and voodoo. Coincidences cant happen, weird connections and evil signs are everywhere, others are secret monsters and only you see them for what they are. Id guess his father was mentally unstable too (since he scared the villagers, something was seriously wrong), Vesa either inherited it (mental illness like schizophrenia, bi-polar) or was just raised to fall in the same rut (personality disorder like extreme narcissism, borderline, anti-social). It still kinda sad story, just in a different way. He wasnt forced in the bubble, he made the bubble himself, never realizing it.

Thank you so much for this VERY well done video. Stories like this should remind people that just because "you deserve love" & "you deserve fair & equal treatment" doesn't mean it happens. So many are treated unjustly, unfairly & w/o love for the entirety of their lives; & often I think that repeatedly hearing that we "deserve" that makes us think we will get it one day. The reverse reaction is pure distrust, so either way you are exposed to vulnerabilities that put you more at risk to even MORE misery. Maybe realism is best, people don't just get what they deserve & no matter where you are there are/can be horrible hateful people, don't expect it to be otherwise & maybe we'll stop assuming it's not our business cuz "someone else must care" or "they'll get what they deserve"...YOU need to make it happen, WE need to make it happen...or it won't, words don't mean SH*TE actions are EVERYTHING! 15yrs not ONE neighbour!?!? Yeah him going missing isnt too surprising. The more you isolate yourself the fewer people check on you and less often, so if you have virtually zero friends or family and no real work obligations then that doesnt really leave anyone to check on you except the guardian. The way they describe it a guardian sounds like a social worker and they're often A: over worked and B: more reactive then proactive so they tend to react to problems but otherwise they only check in on a set schedule.

Finland is like that, There are many people abandoned by the system living alone in filth who have no family. Families in Finland sometimes have relatives they hate. Since people move from regional parts of Finland closer to the capital because of work, they lose touch. One close friend of mine who is now dead had a back injury and was many years trapped in their flat, unable to go out much. They lived in a flat without a lift. The Finnish system just abandoned them. I remember reading about a Finn found in his flat after 7 years of his bills being paid automatically by the bank. I seem to remember them saying the body was kind of mummified. No one had even noticed over all those years. One of the classic suicide methods in Finland is the winter wandering off drinking a bottle of vodka and being found in the spring dead. That I have heard from at least three people that a relative had done that. I think it happens in other Nordic countries because my Norwegian friend told me three of their relatives who live in the far North have taken out their boat and never came back. Being alone in the cold, dark, long Finnish winters when no one cares could send most people mad. Many years ago, when my ex-wife and I were in Estonia with her relatives, her sister had a flat in Tallinn. It was one of those Russian built tower blocks. Each flat shared a small corridor with another flat. There was a bad smell and the housing were told. They wrote to the tenant next door. No answer. We notice the smell get far worse and also that neighbours post box was overflowing down in the entrance hall of the building. In the end in order to get through the corridor you had to cover your face and the smell was terrible. I had smelt death before, and I kept telling them the guy is dead in there. From the ex-wife's sister's balcony, I could see flies on the other flats window. We told them that. No one would listen to us, the Estonian police or the housing they just kept saying they could not go in he might have just gone away. Finally, after maybe 14 weeks, they finally broke the door open and there was a liquified corpse on the mat by the sofa in there. They said he had a heart attack. I think dying alone must be one of the worst things ever. Finland can work out the hot summers it had by the number of drownings because of alcohol. The main reason is often stated to be people drunk in boats standing up to piss in the water being the cause. So far since 2022 to now just over two and a half years 224 people have drowned and there is still five months of 2024 to go.

We had a woman here who was found alive but her social worker had never visited and her husband had transferred her to a boat and she was found under a mountain of tin cans, finally, after many years, someone paid attention to the moans. it was in Everett, Wa, early 80s.

Reminds me of Joyce Vincent in London. There was also a similar case of a Yugoslavian lady who was locked in her flat and no one went in that property for decades. Not until Yugoslavia was no longer a country.

One of the strangest persons I’ve ever met was a Finnish man named Odd I met in Costa Rica. He told me that he took a yearly trip, alone, to the wilds of northern Canada. He’d get flown out into the Yukon and hunt for caribou. Later on I spotted him in San José, capital city of Costa Rica . He was standing on a busy street staring intently at my girlfriend who was unaware that he was across the street staring at her. Nice guy, but very weird.

So did anyone investigate why an appointed (I assume by the court) guardian didn't do his job? And why didn't authorities follow up with the guardian at the time to ask status of the person put in his guardianship? Maybe I'm applying US law to Finland, probably not valid.

A very interesting case though unfortunately all to common . Poor Vesa was possibly a schizophrenic or at least schizoid in personality with paranoid delusions . The "Guardian" is interesting . One would ask if he really existed in the true sense with defined responsibilities and if so did he benefit in some way from Vesa's social welfare payments in his "absence" . So much for the "happiest country" in the World !

Vilho is not pronounced like it would be in Spanish😅 the h is pronounced like the h in how. Also the l in frantsila is pronounced as a regular l. And j in finnish is pronounced as you would pronounce y. So rajamäki would be more like rayamäki

The hostility and disrespect towards his family by the neighbors growing up - tho’ it was unforgivable that he shot the cats after the fact- is despicable.. Because of that action probably the authorities turned their backs on him and then thats why he became the tormented and paranoid man he was thereafter…. So sad the villagers were so unwelcoming to the family. I think that goes along way to the root of his character.

I'm Australian & Guardian for a son with disability. I CAN'T GET PAID FOR WHAT I DO. My income is a government supplied pension paid to carers if they require more than 20 hours/care per week. We can study or work part-time. Once we earn over a certain amount, however; our pensions do get docked. Not all countries are like the US & not all those under Guardianship are Britney Spears - whose father was taking $10,000/month to manage her affairs, & was allowed to do so under California law governing Conservatorship.

They don't get paid for it, nor do they get straight access to the ill persons bank account :)
@bethdumont90204 ай бұрын
@sennituominen4425 I'm one of those Guardians. I live in Australia, so things may be different in your country. 1) I DON'T draw a salary for doing this role. I receive a government pension for being a carer. This pension is a) pegged to the Henderson Poverty Line & b) regularly indexed - twice yearly - with CPI. 2) I DO have access to ALL my son's bank accounts. I have all his bills set up as regular direct debits and provide him with money on an as needs basis via electronic transfer between accounts. Technically there's nothing to stop me from draining his accounts. 3) Except I'd get caught & tired for theft. I have to report regularly to the Tribunal that appointed me, which involves supplying bank statements. They'd see it. This is the Australian system. If I'm not doing this role, government is. And for financial management - government charges. If you can afford it - like a wounded bull. Personal decisions, including health care - they don't charge. But they work 9-5, Mon-Fri, whereas I'm available 24/7 - mainly because the co-Aministrator/Guardian currently lives over 1800 klm away from us.

@@bethdumont9020 Britney's father was a thief who financed his lifestyle by basically stealing from his daughter, and not a guardian in true sense of this word. He was an exception rather than a rule in the U.S.

He may not have been mentally ill. Finns can be extremely quirky, spiteful and hardheaded, especially if they are crossed or treated poorly. The weird behavior pointed out after the robbery in Tanzania is probably just translation errors. Cold nervous would be akin to keeping his feelings “on ice”, to not show fear or let emotions take over. And as others also have said, “without steel” just means without alcohol. He was basically put in an insane asylum for taking the harassment from the village to court. That is a great injustice, there is no connection between taking anyone to court and becoming locked up like that. Someone had too much power and wielded it unjustly. Though shooting the neighbors cats is definitely not a way to improve the neighborly spirit between them.
@coloradoing91723 ай бұрын
Right. Finland doesn't have a jury system, and clearly these court records have not been made public, so it's impossible to tell what kind of litigation he was bringing against his local government.

Regarding his guardian, I imagine with Vesa's resentment towards authority he was absolutely unwilling to cooperate with this guardian and the guardian then just gave up. He might've officially been their charge, but if he refuses to even answer his phone or door, it's impossible to check on him. And being used to being ignored for years, they assumed Vesa was fine, so never called the police.

Wow. This guy was way ahead of his time. Knew about free energy and how corrupt the legal system is. Society brands anyone who goes against the grain as mad. RIP
@heikkiaho66054 ай бұрын
pleeease we have to help these people. we can't just keep on saying that "someone's gone mad" or smth, it only further alienates people. I also honestly think that many psychological diagnoses can be as hurtful as calling them "crazy", and they often don't get to the root cause. If someone is "schizophrenic", there's usually some kind of story behind that (like in the case of Vesa). Something along the lines of: a series of unfortunate events combined with false beliefs that went unnoticed and unchanged. And who TF thought locking people up in institutions is helping anyone?! I guess they're out sight and mind then... In the case of Vesa, if he's paranoid and disoriented, and they just let him leave the embassy on his own? i dont think he found his way home :( i just wish someone had said "don't worry" or "i care for you" or "you're important"

This is such a sad story, the poor man grew up in a community who hated him and with mental health problems that rather than treated were abused. Not to mention a fair share of bad luck, no wonder he just disappeared, must be easy when people are already trying to ignore you.

Sure, it IS impossible to keep 24/7 tabs on someone who isnt very cooperative, but this gentleman was obviously very mentally ill. I hope, wherever he is, alive or otherwise, i hope he is at peace. I hope above all he is at peace. Man...

I asked someone I know who is from Finland if she knew who Vesa Matti Frantsila is/was. She did not. (I don't know whether she ever knew, so can't say if she forgot, but still...)
@SatumainenOlento4 ай бұрын
That "guardianship" might been just short term. Somebody signs the papers for it so that he can get out of the mental hospital. And then, he gets better mentally and the guardianship is over by the time rest of the story happens. Pretty sure that Vesa did learn to hide any problems with his mental health after that visit to the mental hospital! It sounds that he had very bad experience of it. Also, police and other goverment officials are pretty good in Finland. So his complains might been totally without any reason due to his mental health problems. I know a person who is mentally very unwell at the moment is making unbased complainst and claims about goverment officials. It seems to be a habit to those who are a little paranoid.
