I don't think it's fair to immediately jump to self-hatred. Some people who do live in an international area tend to stray away from people of the same ethnicity because maybe the main interaction with the people he's had of those ethnicities has been his family. For example I associate the Chinese language and mandarin with family, and I would probably prefer if a romantic partner spoke primarily in another language. I love my background and have a strong emotional connection with Chinese culture, this is not related to any kind of self-hatred. It's weird that he draws such a hard line but maybe that's only one of the things that puts him off. Not that he's not an asshole still, he completely is. Yes, he is very domineering and emotionally volatile. Seemingly anything will set him off. "You don't compliment me enough!"...ok, I didn't know I was supposed to compliment you every 5 seconds, now I'm getting yelled at? Natalie would often apologize, even though she was the one on the receiving end of aggression. Shane has a lot insecurity which he needs to get under control before he can be a stable partner. Most abusers aren't born evil, and their abuse is not necessarily intentional. Most doctors are power tripping assholes. You don’t need to be smart to be a doctor, you need to memorize things well and think that you help people when you work for an industry dedicated to keeping people sick. I know he’s a vet, but just most doctors are in it for money and power

I’m studying veterinary medicine and there are some men like him at our university and I’ve heard of horrible vets around the city.. also, vet techs are doing such an amazing job and I wish more people would recognise that!

@@MimiTheHamster i can promise you money is NOT the motivating factor in vet med (source: am vet student, will be in debt the rest of my life, as will most of my classmates). power however, definitely a factor. i've for sure known people who actually wanted to do human med but couldn't cut it and vet med was their "backup" and they're on a constant ego/power trip because all they see themselves as is a failed human doctor. OR people whose parents are vets and think they have a silver spoon and will get into vet school as a "legacy" but have no actual care or passion for the field. it's extremely insulting to the rest of us who are here because this is what we want to do.

The utterly defeated postures of all of the other guys while Shek is talking is just...it's magical. It's dark magic, but it's magical. You can see their souls leave their bodies and hover in limbo the longer Shek talks, the shame of having to sit near him and forever be associated with him on the show. The unity of everyone, even Shayne (I'll take Jarvis' word that he is awful in his own ways), in their simmering rage is a sight to behold. I haven't watched the show, but I adore the reaction of the girl who just started laughing when he asked about her size.

Even the guy that sucks hates Shek. I feel despite gaslighting being quite bad what Shek did to the women there was worse (the misogyny and breaking the idea of the show by wanting to see BLIND dates)...he's basically Shayne without the gaslighting (on the show, not sure if he does that off camera, in real life, behind closed doors when he does find a girl he does like). Shek in my opinion is a turd, you can polish a turd to be shiny, but a turd is still a turd.

I like what you said about Shake being a deplorable messenger, because in the reunion he did make a good point about being having an incentive to lead their partner on to stay on the show longer. That doesn't make it right, but it is definitley a thing.

can confirm it is ABSURDLY hard to get into vet school. i have friends who went thru tech programs. had perfect grades. passed every test w/ flying colors. interned at great practices. got rejected from every plac they applied. the competition is insane. i dont know WHAT Shake did to get into one and pass everything.

That's what I've been thinking too, where I'm from it's actually harder to get into a vet program than medicine. I'm really interested in how his life turned out this way. You'd think someone who devotes their life to helping animals would have more empathy

@@madeniquevanwyk Now this is all second hand experience and hearsay from a friend who went through vet school. But from what I gather, it just sucks the empathy from you. From pressure to succeeed in a highly competitive environment to dissecting animals on a daily basis... it just messes with your head. She had the biggest personality I've ever experienced over the course if her time there. Started out as a kind maybe slightly naive girl who wanted to help animals. Now she does animal testing for a pharmaceutic company.

Okay not gonna lie, a version of this show where half the people are conventionally attractive and the other half aren't, and you have no idea which you're getting but you have more time to actually get to know and/or fall in love with them would be a super interesting show, especially to see if that emotional connection does result in people forming attraction despite not being interested on paper. Potentially cruel to the "ugly" ones and of course there'd be incentive to lie or lead each other on to look good to the audience, but like . . . still has the potential to be fascinating (and presumably they'd still be some flavor of hot, just like . . . idk, fat or whatever. TV-show ugly, you know?) And to be clear, Deepti isn't even close to TV-show ugly; she's just objectively beautiful.

I think he did genuinely start to like her for her personality and companionship even if he kept outwardly emphasizing physical attraction, but he associates romance moreso with sex than an emotional connection (i.e. an emotional connection similar to one you'd have with a close friend or family member), and it seems like he is too emotionally immature to have both with one person at once. The best romantic relationships usually work on both a platonic and sexual level, where both sides of the relationship act not only as romantic partners but also as friends who genuinely enjoy spending time together even if they're not having sex. Issue is that there are a lot of assholes out there who see marriage as a way to get a live-in sex machine or housekeeper who they don't want to spend much time with otherwise.

I would not be surprised to see, "What really happens on Love is Blind," because tv does have a history of painting things a different way. (But he should have just told her, no.)
