John Danaher is a highly enigmatic figure in the world of martial arts, particularly Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). He is a renowned BJJ coach, philosopher, and mentor to some of the best fighters, including Georges St-Pierre, Gordon Ryan, Craig Jones, and Garry Tonon. Born in 1967 in Washington, D.C., his family moved back to New Zealand when he was young.
During his teenage years, Danaher specialized in striking martial arts like boxing and kickboxing. He later pursued a Bachelor's degree at the University of Auckland and completed a Master's degree in philosophy in 1991, during which time he began training in karate.
After receiving a scholarship to attend Columbia University in New York, Danaher was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and started training at the Renzo Gracie Academy in Manhattan at the age of 28.
