The idea for the H bomb started with Fermi in a discussion with Teller. Two key elements were further provided by Stanislaw Ulam, and Teller took it from there. Teller spent a great deal of his life carefully grooming the idea that Ulam was bit-player. As for this Garwin, his name appears nowhere in Wikipedia's sprawling article on the device, not even in the links and footnotes. He is literally a historical zero with the bomb. Maybe he ought to be proud of that, who knows?

Brian Williams Look further. Edward Teller and Stan Ulam were the co-inventors of the Hydrogen bomb. Oppenheimer fought against it though Andrei Sakharov wrote that Stalin was determined to build their H-bomb whether America did or not. If Oppenheimer's counsel had been followed, we'd have been at the USSR's mercy.

You thought wrong, like most people...This guy has built it...Enrico Fermi described him as the greatest genius he has ever saw. He was just 24... He completed his PHD in nuclear Physics at the University of Chicago in 2 years under supervision of Fermi. Today if anyone completes a PHD at the same institute in less than 5 years, is considered genius.

Richard Garwin designed the Ivy Mike device, the worlds first full-scale thermonuclear device. When he arrived at Los Alamos, he read the classified documents and figured out how create a physical device that worked. What struck me besides being a genius is what a nice, handsome man he is. See the Mike device in its shot cab before it was detonated in various videos on KZbin.

Mike would have obliterated all 5 boroughs of New York. Not damaged. Obliterated. That's scary. These weapons are insane. All of the people who dreamed them up are a shade one side of completely nuts. I don't care how brilliant Edward Teller was. There's a fine line between genius and insanity. The kind of mind that wants to go.. "Atomic Bomb?? We can do better". And then they have a crisis of conscience?? too late.

That bomb saved many lives when it was used! It saved far more just being on the shelf! Does anyone believe Russia would have left Cuba if nuclear war wasn’t on the table? Then there’s the energy produced both civilian and military.

@@jimmywrangles right they also wouldn't have been in Cuba if the United States wasn't in Turkey with nukes which is why Russia went to Cuba with nukes to level the playing field. But to your point, you're right if they were never invented all that would have been avoided.

@@dennismckay1013 He wasn't right. He was one-sided in his comment because he was quick to point out Russia's missile being in Cuba but willfully failed to point out that the US started the whole thing by first placing their nuclear weapons in Turkey, which promoted Russia to place one in Cuba in response. I don't know why it's so difficult for people to give an accurate account of events. You will notice this same attitude in most main stream media today.

For any doubters, I suggest You go to Wiki. Look for Ivy Mike (which was the first full-scale test of a thermonuclear device). Scroll down to " Device design and preparations" and Read. Or, go to Wiki- Richard Garwin. Scroll to career, read the first 3 sentences. Make sure you Read. Done.
