The moment Jesus said, “show me a denarius”, the priests knew they lost. Five years prior, Pilate had a bunch of golden shields brought in that had Caesar’s image on it. The Jews were so upset that Pilate had the shields removed. Undoubtedly the people knew this and it stuck with them when they witnessed what Jesus had done and said here.
