In 1994, 42 year old Tony Cicoria was struck by lightning in New York whilst using a public telephone. Before the accident, Tony Cicoria had no interest in music. Yet in the years after this event, as well as debuting his first piano composition, the awesomely named ‘The Lightning Sonata’, he was performing Chopin and Brahms live as a concert pianist. In today’s video, I want to explore Cicoria’s unique case as well as the phenomenon of ‘acquired savant syndrome’, where an individual develops extraordinary gifts after a traumatic accident - and how relevant that is here. So did Tony Cicoria really gain a superpower to play piano when he was struck by lightning, or is there more to it than that?
