to answer the question as to why the toddler stress assessment is there, it's shown in vol 4 that there was one administered to adam at a young age. his results state that he did not react to any of the stimuli in the test, and that it may be due to 'recent phenomena occurring to children. since we know adam is an alternate, it seems to imply that this test was designed to detect child alternates. i think the idea of having it in the dark room with no outside interference was to make sure that the child did not react to anything outside of the test. if the baby reacted to anything outside of the test, it would impact the results and leave the child alter to go undetected.

Yep, it was a way to tell if they were snatched, I also believe they were more likely to go after kids at first so they could grow up learning how to blend in better when children have more space for acting weird or unacceptable

I agree with Jack about the TTS in the original being scarier. I think a lot of what makes the series itself scary is its utilization of the Uncanny Valley: because we’re humans, we’re inclined to trust things that are human-shaped and human-sounding - but only up to a certain point (you can look up more details but that’s the gist of it). A real human voice is less viscerally off-putting than the robotic voice, whose monotone (and therefore indifference) frightens you on an almost subconscious level. This robot is NOT a person, it does NOT care about you, and in a universe where we all have to be on the lookout for things that are not *quite* human, you’re primed to find synthesized speech uncomfortable because it’s designed to mimic a real human trait - precisely what the alternates are doing. My interpretation of the original first episode has always been that the TTS was used in place of a human voice somewhat because it’s alarming on a fundamental level, but primarily because it’s supposed to imply that the alternates are already in charge; the artificial announcer is meant to mirror the artificial nature of those in power in Mandela County. Well-intentioned people like Dave and the police officers (whose names I can’t remember) are given guidelines that will either deter them from discovering the truth by instilling a sense of helplessness with regard to the alternates, or actively harm themselves or those around them. The TTS also speaks with zero emotion when discussing matters of life and death, including instances like in the 911 dispatcher video where a person required to view these tapes is being *instructed* to *choose* to let someone die and be replaced by an alternate. The TTS is indifferent to human suffering in the face of their doom, which causes the viewer at home to feel two of the most prominent human fears (which are also frequently exploited in horror media): isolated and out of control. The people of Mandela County are alone, and no one is coming for them.
