The Zao area of Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture is the home of the Zao Onsen Ski Resort, which features so-called "snow monster" that are in fact frost-covered trees arising from the site's unique natural environment. The resort also boasts a skiing distance of around ten kilometers-among the longest in Japan-and fine powder snow for skiers to enjoy while also offering one of the oldest hot springs in the country, which features strongly acidic water, a rare delight.
